Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woodbury District Curriculum

By providing a road map for the teachers to best meet the need of all learners, the Regional School District 14 is transitioning the local curriculum in K-12 Language Art and Mathematics to align with the Common Core State Standards. Classroom teachers, counselors, and technology teachers all participate in the planning, instruction, and assessment so that students receive the highest quality education and accountability. Student progress is measured in a number of ways, including standardized testing, group projects, and authentic assessment.

Regional School District 14 will begin using the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium for student assessment. Students in the Regional School District 14 are assessed using the Connecticut Smarter Balanced Assessment in Grade 3 through 8 and 11. Unlike the ACT, the SAT is considered an aptitude test measuring general thinking and problem-solving abilities. The critical reasoning will present you with reading comprehension questions. Writing includes multiple-choice questions on grammar, word choice, and organization. The SAT math section includes multiple-choice and grid-in questions on topics including algebra, geometry, statistics, and data analysis. The essay requires the student to respond to a prompt and support with clear ideas and evidence. Scores range from 200 to 800 on each section with overall scores from 600 to 2400. Offered 8 times a year, the test normally takes 3 hours and 45 minutes. The SAT's have a unique questioning style and students are well advised to spend significant time preparing for the exam.
