Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woods Cross District Curriculum

The Social Studies curriculum is linked to the Core Standards, particularly in Language Arts. Students learn basic reading skills in kindergarten through second grade, and their Social Studies instruction in those grades is largely in small lessons from the teachers and some themed reading. Starting in third grade, the Social Studies curriculum is designed to help students build their literacy skills while also giving them crucial knowledge about the world.

They practice reading informational texts about periods in history and social studies, and hone their writing skills writing about these concepts and their own opinions. High school students take a variety of courses in history and social studies, including US history, world history, and US government. Their reading for these classes makes up a large part of the informational reading requirement for the Core Standards, and their requirements for these classes are derived from the core, with a focus on building critical reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for Testing

Students do well on tests when they are familiar with both the format and the content of the test. That means that practice in the types of questions that will be on tests is helpful; tutors or preparation books can help with this for standardized testing, and teachers and tutors can provide specific help for classroom tests. However, students also need other sorts of preparation before a test. Reviewing material is helpful, but spending too much time reviewing can also produce ‘burnout’ and make it hard for students to function well. Being well-rested matters a lot, as does being calm and confident.
