Woodside District and Curriculum

The California Content and the Common Core Standards provide the curricular framework for the instructional process in the two school districts Woodside’s students attend. The sets of standards used are broken down by subject area and the Common Core Standards are used as the model of Language Arts and Math learning. All other subjects, electives, and programs have curriculum that lay out the expectations for students at all levels of their academic progress in that subject.

The Common Core Standards were developed in response to concerns that students were not properly prepared to face college and career challenges. The goal was to devise a framework for these subjects that specified the grade level progression of skills and knowledge, while also specifying the advanced thinking skills, concepts or principles that students need to develop. The Common Core Standards for Math is designed to target major topic areas like measurement, quantities, algebra, geometry, and data analysis in such a way that students gain basic skills during the early years and then move into far more detailed content during high school.

We currently cover the following Woodside-area school district: Sequoia Union High School District, Woodside Elementary School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woodside District Curriculum

Language Arts is designed around the goals of strong reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. These basic areas of literacy and communication are the focus of the K-12 framework and students are expected to perform more in-depth analysis and evaluative tasks in high school. Writing is focused on significantly in the curriculum and the classroom for its ability to promote thought, expression, and idea-generation. The skills of writing from basic grammar and spelling to complex sentence structure are all skills that are taught and which students are expected to use.

Schools are increasing the opportunities for students to engage in learning which they find exciting. There are more small schools and academies than ever before, and the expectation is that students have a strong foundation in their core courses so they are prepared to take on these types of learning opportunities. The chance for students to challenge themselves, particularly in subjects that they find interesting, is occurring more in the schools.
