Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wyethville District Curriculum

Creativity is a part of the Science curriculum at Wythe County Public Schools. Using themes in the elementary, teachers are able to join the different subject areas to make the science experience memorable. Educators read books that deal with each topic, both fiction and non-fiction, to help draw the students into the topic. This helps to ignite curiosity, whether about plants or energy, which will help them enjoy future science classes.

Mathematics is introduced from the first day of school at Wythe County Public Schools. Students come into the classroom and start a routine including the calendar and counting the days. From this basic skill, children become aware of number sense which will be with them from this day. This number sense will lead to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as more advanced mathematics like statistics and calculus.

Chalk Talk: Sixth-Grade Reading Expectations

The sixth-grade reading program has expectations that help students improve their skills. In sixth-grade students read many books. Then they discuss, write and are tested over these readings. Within these books will be a variety of fiction, dramas, poetry, and non-fiction works of literature. Students will be expected to share what happened in the story and how the book may remind the student of their own life. They will learn style, tone, point-of-view and credibility in what they are reading. These skills will aid them as they go on through middle and high school.
