Chalk Talk: Why Students Need Math Skills

Not everyone will grow up to be an accountant, but regardless, everyone needs a strong grasp of basic mathematical concepts. Math teaches valuable skills beyond being able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Math teaches students how to see the bigger picture, find solutions to problems, analyze situations, and foresee long-term consequences. Being able to determine how well or how poorly an investment is doing is just one example of these skills put to good use in everyday life. Calculating the tip at dinner is another example of math skills needed in the real world. Math also helps students learn how to utilize important tools, such as calculators and measuring devices. Math is needed to prepare meals, determine monthly budgets, and evaluate athletic performance, such as keeping track of one’s progress while running. From being financially responsible to figuring out how long a trip will take, the everyday uses of math skills are many.
