Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Yazoo City District Curriculum

The goal of excellence begins with the Math program in the elementary schools. Students learn different ways to solve equations, whether they are working with whole numbers or decimals. They also learn how to estimate and how to describe input-output function tables, on paper and verbally. When they enter high school, students take the skills they have acquired and apply them to algebraic equations including finding slope and linear functions.

In the Yazoo City School’s science curriculum, students begin exploring the world around them from the early years. They begin by studying food chains and ecosystems. In junior high they begin to understand scientific inquiry, including how to use the tools found in a science lab. Then before graduation, they go on to learn about cells and cell division as well as DNA and RNA. The goal is to establish the base of science knowledge by which students are able to adapt a stronger conceptual understanding of the subject.

Chalk Talk: How College is Different from High School

The transition from high school to college can be difficult if a student is not prepared. One of the things to keep in mind is that scheduling is dependent on the student making the connection with an advisor, plus the choice of classes can be overwhelming. The student needs to remember that there are requirements that must be met for their major, plus many classes will be offered at different times. When scheduling the classes, make sure that the classes do not overlap and that they are the ones that are needed. When attending classes, the student is treated like an adult. Each student is responsible for their own work and grades. College is a great way to spread the wings, as long as the responsibilities of the student are kept in mind.
