York District and Curriculum

The detailed curriculum for both York school districts meets or exceeds the Pennsylvania Core State Standards in Reading/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, and other academic areas. The schools are also preparing students for next generation learning challenges through an increased emphasis on science, technology, communications and design. These new programs have also been developed with the goal of engaging the curiosity of students and providing relevance to other subject learning.

We currently cover the following York-area school districts: Central York School District and York Suburban School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the York District Curriculum

The English/Language Arts program balances skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and emphasizes development of literacy in a variety of media. From kindergarten on, students develop ways to read and think critically as they become familiar with different types of literature. They progress from reading and writing simple stories in early elementary school to complex fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Writing is taught as a process so that students are able to develop academic writing using the stages of brainstorming, drafting, writing, revising and editing, and publishing.

The Everyday Math program forms the basis for math education in elementary school. Students learn how to use mathematics in practical ways, while they are developing important concepts in number theory, statistics, and geometry, as well as the foundations for algebra, calculus, and computer science. Science content is introduced early and students apply scientific processes from kindergarten on as they explore the natural world around them.

Chalk Talk: Learning Your Part, Doing Your Part

Many activities in school and life involve learning specific skills in order to contribute to a larger group. For example, basketball players learn to dribble and shoot in order to help their team play the sport and win a game, and musicians learn their individual parts in order to play in an orchestra. Similarly, students practice literacy skills or learn their part and perform in a production before an audience. Employees work together in teams to help their company meet sales figures. Each person contributes, gains experience and learns new skills.
