Youngstown District and Curriculum

The schools in Youngstown provide students with an academic experience that combines traditional and innovative learning. Newer programs in areas like STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are supported by a curriculum designed to emphasize the development of critical thinkers with strong literacy skills. Each subject area is designed so that fundamentals compound and help students develop a higher-level of understanding in each discipline.

We currently cover the following Youngstown-area school district: Youngstown City School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Youngstown District Curriculum

At all grade levels, the Youngstown City School District has four areas of emphasis in its English curriculum: reading (including literature and informational text), writing, speaking and listening, and language (grammar). While educators are encouraged to teach kindergartners by reading aloud, role playing, and encouraging story-telling, they are instructed to teach high school students by reading aloud plays and poetry, giving narrative and persuasive essay writing assignments, and drilling students on grammar.

The goal of the Math curriculum is to produce students who can use abstract reasoning to get to the roots of a problem, model problems, use symbols, demonstrate precision, and identify structures and patterns. Students work towards these skills through different activities, depending on grade level. For example, kindergarten students may concentrate on a calendar as a tool for teaching mathematics. Middle and high school students have a more structured approach to learning math.

Chalk Talk: Art and Music in Schools

When schools face budget problems, art and music programs are often the first to go. This is hardly surprising, since it is difficult to measure the success of these programs with standardized testing. Nevertheless, they are an important part of any school’s curriculum. Education is not simply about mastering skills; it is about creating well-rounded individuals, and an appreciation of art and music is a necessary part of this. Art and music classes expose the students to a new world of self-expression. This is especially crucial for students who may not be exposed to this in their homes. For these students, school may be the only place where they can uncover a hidden talent or passion for the arts.
