Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Youngsville District Curriculum

The Lafayette Parish School System has implemented the Common Core State Standards in all the district schools. Common Core provides clear benchmarks for students in the areas of English and Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. In English and Language Arts students learn to read, write and speak using correct grammar and conventions. Students are introduced to both literature and informational text so that they are prepared for the types of texts they may find in college or on the job.

The literacy standards implemented in the classes are also used across all academic courses and technology classes so that correct English is reinforced on a consistent basis. Writing assignments include both expository writing and informational writing that grows in complexity with each grade. In Mathematics, students focus in on core math topics which are learned in an intensive manner including computational skills, algebra, geometry and measurement, statistics, and proportional reasoning.
