Youngtown District and Curriculum

Arizona has an intensive College and Career Readiness program designed to provide all Arizona students with the skills they will need after graduation. The program is scaffolded in that it builds learning over the years in a progressive manner so that students have a unified learning experience from elementary through high school. The district does not mandate the way in which these skills and learning objectives must be taught, classroom teachers are able to use their judgement in how best to deliver the classroom lessons based on the learning styles of the students.

We currently cover the following Youngtown-area school district: Youngtown Public Charter School.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Youngtown District Curriculum

Third grade is considered to be a pivotal year for students, for this is when they will learn better reading skills. They will learn how to decode multisyllabic words and will learn to write paragraphs with clear sentences. Vocabulary will be increased and students will learn that not everything they read can be taken literally. In math, third graders learn multiplication, division and fractions to prepare them for higher level math like algebra. With each following grade students will learn more complex skills preparing them for college and careers when they graduate.

The high school curriculum introduces students to more specialized learning both in core academics as well as career and technical areas. Students are encouraged to participate in electives in the arts, technology, or languages so that they may find springboards to future interests while also applying the critical thinking skills involved in learning to master new subjects.

Chalk Talk: How Do I Help My Child Deal With Disappointment?

Disappointment is hard for anyone, but it is especially difficult for children. Listen to your child and allow him or her to talk about how he or she feels. Not all children will be able to understand, but validate their feelings and share some disappointments you had as a child. You cannot make the bad feelings go away and he or she will need time to work through it. Helping your child understand how to cope with negative emotions is one of the most important roles in parenting. Just be there with a listening ear and a caring heart. Children’s literature can be especially useful to show how other people go through similar experiences, how they cope, and how to understand one’s own feelings.
