Every complete sentence contains a subject. A subject is a word or phrase is a sentence that indicates the doer of action, the receiver of action in passive form, or which is described or identified in the sentence. The subject of a sentence can be a person, place, thing or an idea. To find the subject locate the verb and ask a question by placing \u201cwho\u201d or \u201cwhat\u201d before it \u2013 the answer is the subject.<\/p>\n
Ex: Kate<\/span> runs very fast.<\/p>\n The verb in the above sentence is \u201cruns\u201d. Who runs? Kate runs. \u201cKate\u201d is the subject of the sentence.<\/p>\n Look at the more examples below. Underlined are the subjects of the sentences.<\/p>\n Jimmy<\/span> likes strawberries.<\/p>\n You<\/span> are invited to tonight\u2019s party.<\/p>\n My aunt<\/span> is coming home.<\/p>\n In Imperative sentence<\/strong> (that give a command or order) the subject is always \u201cyou\u201d that is understood rather than expressed.<\/p>\n Ex: Move out.<\/p>\n Stand up.<\/p>\n In the sentences which begin with \u201cthere\u201d the actual subject comes after \u201cthere\u201d.<\/p>\n Ex: There is a boy<\/span> looking for this book.<\/p>\n The simple subject<\/strong> does the verb without any description.<\/p>\n Ex: The kitten<\/span> drank all the milk kept in the bowl<\/p>\n In the above sentence kitten is the simple subject.<\/p>\n The complete subject<\/strong> is accompanied by the modifiers.<\/p>\n Ex: The big, hungry, black kitten drank all the milk kept in the bowl.<\/p>\n The kitten in the above sentence was big, hungry and black.
