Past continuous tense uses present participle with \u2018ing\u2019. The past continuous tense is an important tense used to express action at a particular moment in the past. The action started before that moment but has not finished at that moment.<\/p>\n<p>More uses of Past continuous tense:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to express an action that took place in past when shorter action happened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>e.g. I was going home when it started raining.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to express two actions that were going on at the same time in the past using connector \u2018while\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>e.g. I was reading newspaper while you were having coffee.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to ask polite questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>e.g. I was wondering if you could come tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018was\u2019 is used with I and singular subjects.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018were\u2019 is used with you, we, they and plural subjects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive form<\/strong>: Subject + was\/were + Verb first form with ing + object<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was going home.<\/p>\n<p>They were watching a movie.<\/p>\n<p>She was cooking dinner.<\/p>\n<p>You were playing with your friends<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Negative form<\/strong>: Subject + was\/were + not + Verb first form with ing + object<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They were not playing football.<\/p>\n<p>She was not coming home.<\/p>\n<p>We were not listening to music.<\/p>\n<p>Tina was not studying.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interrogative form<\/strong>: Was\/were + subject + First form of Verb with ing + object + ?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Was she studying for her exams?<\/p>\n<p>Were they not going for dance class?<\/p>\n<p>Were you watching television?<\/p>\n<p>Was Dan cooking dinner?<\/p>\n<p>SchoolTutoring Academy is the premier educational services company for K-12 and college students.
