Equation of a line:<\/strong>
\nAn equation is called the equation of a straight line if each point on the line satisfies that equation and no other point on the plane satisfies that equation.<\/p>\n

General form of equation of a line:<\/strong>
\nThe general form of equation of a line is ax + by + c=0.
\nExample:
\nx + y \u2013 3 = 0
\n2x \u2013 3y + 1= 0<\/p>\n

Formulas for equation of a line:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Slope \u2013 intercept form:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The slope intercept form of a line is y=mx+b,
\nWhere, m = slope of the line and
\nb = y-intercept of the line.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Example:<\/strong>
\nConvert the equation of line x + y \u2013 6 =0 into slope \u2013 intercept form.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Given equation is x + y \u2013 6 = 0
\nSubtracting x,
\ny – 6 = -x
\nAdding 6,
\ny = -x + 6 = (-1)x + 6 = mx + b,
\nwhere m = -1 and b = 6<\/p>\n

2. Point – slope form:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The point slope of a line is y-y1 = m(x-x1),
\nWhere (x1,y1) is a point on the line and
\nm = slope of the line<\/strong><\/p>\n

Example:<\/strong>
\nFind the equation of line containing the point (-1,2) whose slope is -1.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong>
\nHere (x1,y1) = (-1,2) and m = -1.
\nThe equation of line is,
\ny-y1 = m(x-x1)
\ny \u2013 2 = -1(x+1)
\ny-2 = -x -1
\nx + y -1 = 0.<\/p>\n

\n3. Intercept form:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The equation of a line in intercept form is x\/a+y\/b=1
\nWhere a = x-intercept and
\nb= y-intercept made by the line.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Example:<\/strong>
\nFind the equation of line making the intercepts 2 and 3 on the x and y axis respectively.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Solution:<\/strong>
\nHere a= 2 and b = 3.
\nThe equation of line is,
\nx\/a+y\/b=1
\nx\/2+y\/3=1
\n3x + 2y = 3
\n3x + 2y \u2013 3 = 0.<\/p>\n
