There are also other uses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To express duration of a past action up to a certain point in the past<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>e.g. She had been waiting for 3 hours when we arrived.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To show cause of an action or situation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>e.g. The grass was wet because it had been raining.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To express third conditional sentences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>e.g. If it had not been raining, we could have gone out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rules<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Had been\u2019 is used with subjects<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u2018Since\u2019 is used definite time e.g. since morning, since yesterday, since 5 o\u2019clock<\/li>\n<li>\u2018For\u2019 is used with indefinite time e.g. for 2 years, 3 weeks, 4 hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Positive form: <\/strong><strong>Subject + had been + First form of Verb with ing + object + since\/for + time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p>1. She had been working here for 5 years when she left.<\/p>\n<p>2. He had been sleeping for 2 hours when I reached.<\/p>\n<p>3.
