If the function is graphed, the domain and range can be identified from the picture, or the domain and range can be found algebraically with some reasoning.<\/p>\n<h5>Domain<\/h5>\n<p>The domain of a function is the set of all x-values that have a y-value associated with them. In other words, it is the set of all &#8220;inputs&#8221; that will receive an &#8220;output&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Examples<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/testpreparations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/yx.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2140 alignright\" title=\"y=x\" src=\"https:\/\/testpreparations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/yx.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Find the domain of y = x.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The graph of y = x is shown to the right. We can see that it is defined for all x-values because the line will continue to infinity. Thus, the domain of y = x is all real numbers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Find the domain of <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testpreparations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/sqrtx.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2145 alignleft\" title=\"sqrt(x)\" src=\"https:\/\/testpreparations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/sqrtx.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"69\" height=\"53\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We do not have the graph but there are properties of the square root function that we can use in order to determine the domain. In order to square root a number, it must be greater or equal to 0. This tells us that y only has a value when x is greater or equal to 0. Therefore the domain is x must be greater or equal to 0.<\/p>\n<h5>Range<\/h5>\n<p>The range of a function is the set of all y-values that have a corresponding x-value. In other terms, it is the set of all &#8220;outputs&#8221; of a function that have an &#8220;input&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Example<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Find the range of y = x<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/testpreparations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/parabola1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2146 alignright\" title=\"parabola\" src=\"https:\/\/testpreparations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/parabola1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The graph y = x<sup>2<\/sup> is the standard parabola as shown to the right. We can see that the graph has y-values that continue to positive infinity but have a minimum of 0 at the origin.
