State-by-state assessments of students in English\/Language Arts are causing the teaching of grammar to return to the classroom. Each rule can be a little tricky; this is why isolating each rule and understanding its purpose is a useful method for learning grammar.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>subjunctive<\/em> tense is a verb form that is identical to the \u2018simple\u2019 or \u2018bare infinitive\u2019 forms, and is most often used to express urgency. A bare infinitive form is the same as the infinitive form (i.e.,<em> to suggest) <\/em>without the \u2018to\u2019 &#8211; hence, it is called \u2018bare.\u2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The noted exception to this similarity is the past tense of <em>be, <\/em>which is <em>were.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As stated above, the <em>subjunctive<\/em> most often follows a verb or expression that suggests importance, emphasis, or urgency.<\/p>\n<p>The following is an example of a <em>subjunctive,<\/em> following a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">verb<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I strongly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">suggest<\/span> that you <em>participate<\/em> in the discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And, an example of a <em>subjunctive,<\/em> following an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">expression<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">It is crucial<\/span> that you <em>participate<\/em> in the discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The subjunctive tense also appears in negative, continuous and passive forms. This is an example of a <em>negative form <\/em>of the<em> subjunctive tense<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is crucial that you <em>not abdicate<\/em> your role in the discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, note this example of the <em>passive form <\/em>of the <em>subjunctive tense<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was important to the coordinator that the audience <em>be invited <\/em>to participate in\u00a0the discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, this is how the <em>continuous form <\/em>of the<em> subjunctive tense<\/em> appears:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some sources insist the event\u2019s coordinator will <em>be requiring <\/em>audience members\u00a0to participate in the discussion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Understanding each rule for itself is an aid to understanding what something is, and what something is not, and so when faced with a question on what type of verb tense is being used in a sentence, the question and possible answers will make sense and a correct answer can be found using logic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tutorOrange\">SchoolTutoring Academy<\/span> is the premier educational services company for K-12 and college students.
