{"id":2362,"date":"2012-07-11T18:31:13","date_gmt":"2012-07-11T18:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/help\/?p=2362"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:33:42","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:33:42","slug":"schooltutoring-academy-reviews-operations-on-inequalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/schooltutoring-academy-reviews-operations-on-inequalities\/","title":{"rendered":"SchoolTutoring Academy Reviews: Operations on Inequalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Inequalities are used to compare any two statements.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Inequality:<\/span><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>An inequality is a mathematical statement in which two real numbers or two expressions are connected by &lt;,&gt;, \u2264 or \u2265.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(i)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>2x &#8211; 3 \u2264 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(ii)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>x \u2013 4 \u2265 5\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Operations on inequalities: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>i) The same number can be added to (or subtracted from) the given inequality with out changing its sign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example &#8211; 1:\u00a0 <\/strong>x+5 &lt; 6<\/p>\n<p>Subtracting\u00a0 5 from both sides, we get x&lt;1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example &#8211; 2:\u00a0 <\/strong>x-5 &lt; 6<\/p>\n<p>Adding 5 on both sides, we get x&lt;11.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ii) Both the sides of the inequality can be multiplied (or divided) by the same positive number with out changing its sign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example-1:\u00a0 <\/strong>x&lt;5<\/p>\n<p>Multiplying both sides by 2, we get 2x&lt;10.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example-2:\u00a0 <\/strong>5x&lt;20<\/p>\n<p>Dividing both sides by 5, we get x&lt;4.<\/p>\n<p>iii)\u00a0Both the sides of the inequality can be multiplied (or divided) by the same negative number\u00a0 by changing its sign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example-1:\u00a0 <\/strong>-x&lt;3<\/p>\n<p>Multiplying both sides by -1, we get x&gt;-3<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example-2:\u00a0 <\/strong>-5x&lt;20<\/p>\n<p>Dividing both sides by -5, we get x&gt;-4.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>SchoolTutoring Academy<\/strong><\/span> is the premier educational services company for K-12 and college students.
