The following are words commonly used to accomplish this, and that are often used interchangeably, and, more or less mistakenly.<\/p>\n<h4>Farther vs. Further<\/h4>\n<p><em>Farther<\/em> refers to a <em>comparative<\/em> amount of literal distance, when (nouns) are more or less physically <em>far<\/em> from one another.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The planet Neptune is many, many millions of miles <em>farther<\/em> from the sun than is Jupiter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Further<\/em> is specified to mean a <em>comparative <\/em>amount of figurative distance, or literal increase in quantity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Nothing could have been <em>further<\/em> from his mind than the price of applesauce.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0For <em>further<\/em> reading on the solar system, please refer to the list of recommended books in the appendix.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is worth noting that while <em>further<\/em> can be used interchangeably in both the literal and figurative circumstances, <em>farther<\/em> is more restricted to a literal meaning and cannot also refer to an increase in quantity.<\/p>\n<h4>Fewer vs. Less<\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>These <em>comparatives &#8211; fewer,<\/em> and <em>less &#8211;<\/em> both refer to some or another reduction in quantity amongst (nouns.) The key to understanding which of these is appropriate to use, is to check whether the noun being modified is a \u201cmass noun\u201d (usually singular in usage, and not readily quantifiable in #\u2019s of units) or a \u201ccount noun\u201d (readily pluralized, and highly quantifiable in #\u2019s of units).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0We need <em>less<\/em> pasta and more sauce. (mass noun: pasta)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0I will like there to be <em>fewer<\/em> instances of gun violence in America. (count noun: instances)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One common exception to this with regard to units of time, money or distance. These read like mass nouns (they are largely singular in usage) but are certainly count nouns (in that they are readily quantifiable).
