Hence the theorem is named as Pythagoras theorem. Pythagoras theorem states that \u201cIn a right angled triangle, the square of length of the hypotenuse (the longest side) is the sum of the squares of the other two sides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3456\" title=\"pythagoras1\" src=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Pythagoras theorem,<\/p>\n<p>c<sup>2<\/sup> = a<sup>2<\/sup>+b<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>where <strong><em>c<\/em><\/strong> is the hypotenuse and <strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong>,<strong><em>b<\/em><\/strong> are the legs of the right angle triangle.<\/p>\n<p>This means that, if we frame the squares along all the three sides of a right angled triangle then the area of square along hypotenuse is equal to the areas of the other two squares put together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3457\" title=\"pythagoras2\" src=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3460\" title=\"pythagoras3\" src=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"79\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here 5<sup>2<\/sup> = 3<sup>2<\/sup> + 4<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>25 = 9+16<\/p>\n<p>25=25.<\/p>\n<p>So, Pythagoras theorem is used to determine whether the given triangle is right-angled.<\/p>\n<p>Since here we got 25=25 using the statement of Pythagoras theorem, we can say that the triangle with lengths 3,4 and 5 is right-angled.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Pythagoras theorem is used to determine the length of an unknown side of a right angled triangle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras41.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3461\" title=\"pythagoras4\" src=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras41.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"80\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Pythagoras theorem,<\/p>\n<p>a<sup>2<\/sup> + 4<sup>2<\/sup> = 52<\/p>\n<p>a<sup>2<\/sup> + 16 = 25<\/p>\n<p>a<sup>2<\/sup> = 25-16=9<\/p>\n<p>a = \u221a9=3<\/p>\n<p>In the same way, Pythagoras theorem is used to obtain the formula for the diagonal of a square.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3462\" title=\"pythagoras5\" src=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/pythagoras5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"127\" height=\"137\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since all the angles in square are right angles, Pythagoras theorem can be applicable for the triangle which is inside the square.<\/p>\n<p>So, diagonal<sup>2<\/sup> = a<sup>2<\/sup> +a<sup>2<\/sup>=2a<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>So, <strong>the diagonal of square = \u221a2 a<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nStill need help with Mathematics?
