Following are some (more) commonly confused words, with examples in usage.<\/p>\n<h5>Among vs. Between<\/h5>\n<p>Similar to the rule of \u2018both\u2019 and \u2018all\u2019 the difference between <em>among <\/em>and <em>between<\/em> rests on how many things you are discussing. <em>Among<\/em> is used to distinguish among groups of more than two and<em> between<\/em> is used to distinguish between groups of two.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The difference <em>between<\/em> the brother and sister was noticed by everyone that knew them.<\/li>\n<li>The differences <em>among<\/em> the triplets were surprising.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Accurate vs. Precise<\/h5>\n<p><em>Accuracy<\/em> refers to how true a measurement is to what has been measured &#8211; or, as in the sentence at the top of this page &#8211; how close a choice of word is to the intended meaning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The finishing times of the marathon runners were <em>accurately<\/em> measured by a stopwatch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Precision<\/em> refers to how relatively close a given set of measurements are to each other, without regard to how true any of the measurements may or may not be to what has been measured. When discussing more than one measurement, <em>precise<\/em> is usually the appropriate word to use.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0He always showed up at <em>precisely<\/em> the right time to eavesdrop on all the latest gossip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no <em>precise<\/em> means of measuring human intelligence, because multiple methods yield multiple results.<\/p>\n<h5>Ascent vs. Assent<\/h5>\n<p>Despite how similar these words seem, there is no similarity in their meaning. <em>Ascent<\/em> means to rise and <em>Assent<\/em> means agreement. The first is a verb and the latter a noun.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The family watched the hot-air balloon make its <em>ascent<\/em> into the sky.<\/li>\n<li>The family<em> assented<\/em> that on their next trip they would take a hot-air balloon ride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The easiest trick to remember this rule is to consider the word \u2018descend\u2019 and use that to clarify the difference between the two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span>SchoolTutoring Academy<\/span> is the premier educational services company for K-12 and college students.
