This law is also known as cosine formula or cosine rule. The law of cosines can be used to find the third side of triangle when two sides and the enclosed angle is known, and to find the angles of triangles when all three sides are known.<\/p>\n<p>If a, b, and c are the lengths of the sides of the triangle, and A, B and C are the opposite angles as shown below then according to cosine rule:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/sine-law.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-323\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/sine-law.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>a<sup>2<\/sup> = b<sup>2<\/sup> + c<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 2bccos(A)<\/p>\n<p>b<sup>2<\/sup> = c<sup>2<\/sup> + a<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 2cacos(B)<\/p>\n<p>c<sup>2<\/sup> = a<sup>2<\/sup> + b<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 2abcos(C)<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/cosine-example.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-353\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/cosine-example.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the above figure we know, a = 18, c = 10 and angle B = 40\u00b0<\/p>\n<p>As per Law of Cosines, b<sup>2<\/sup> = c<sup>2<\/sup> + a<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 2cacos(B)<\/p>\n<p>b<sup>2<\/sup> = 10<sup>2<\/sup> + 18<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 2 \u00d7 10 \u00d7 18 \u00d7 cos(40\u00b0)<\/p>\n<p>b<sup>2 <\/sup>= 100 + 324 \u2013 360 \u00d7 0.766<\/p>\n<p>b<sup>2 <\/sup>= 148.24<\/p>\n<p>b = sqrrt(148.24) = 12.17<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Law of cosines relates the lengths of sides of an oblique triangle (triangle that is not right-angled) to the cosine of one of its angles.
