{"id":3574,"date":"2014-06-25T18:47:07","date_gmt":"2014-06-25T18:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/testpreparations.com\/help\/?p=3574"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:25:28","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:25:28","slug":"proofreading-for-parallel-structure-on-the-sat-and-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/proofreading-for-parallel-structure-on-the-sat-and-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Proofreading for Parallel Structure on the SAT and ACT"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Overview:\u00a0 What Is Parallel Structure<\/strong>?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Parallel structure in writing is a refinement technique in which verbs, subjects, and clauses are made similar.\u00a0 It is tested on the ACT and SAT in grammar questions, as it is a feature that adds impact to writing.\u00a0 Often, phrases that mean the same may not be parallel.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Checklist:\u00a0 Are Verbs in the Same Tense?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Parallel verbs in each clause should be in the same tense.\u00a0 For example, parallel verbs are &#8220;He came, he saw, and he conquered&#8221; not &#8220;he came, he saw, and he will conquer. &#8221; Similarly, if helping verbs are used in one clause, the same helping verbs should be used in the other clauses.\u00a0 &#8220;She may gather enough support, she may raise enough funds, and she may win the election,&#8221; rather than &#8220;she may gather enough support, she raised enough funds, and she will win the election.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Checklist:\u00a0 \u00a0Is the Subject the Same in All Clauses?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In order for clauses to be parallel, the subjects should remain the same.\u00a0 &#8220;The corporation will sponsor the fun run, the CEO will speak at the breakfast, and they will wear T-shirts advertising the event&#8221; is unclear and not parallel.\u00a0 In order to make the structure parallel, one way to recast the clauses is, &#8220;The corporation will sponsor the fun run, its CEO will speak at the opening breakfast, and its employees will wear T-shirts advertising the event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Checklist:\u00a0 Are the Same Types of Clauses Used?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">More subtly, parallel clauses need to have the same structure.\u00a0 A sentence like &#8220;The building manager will choose the maintenance projects that they think will make their properties more attractive&#8221; has two clauses that are less parallel than the recast sentence &#8220;The building manager will choose the maintenance projects that will make their properties more attractive.&#8221;\u00a0 Sometimes it is a matter of eliminating unnecessary words in order to clarify the structure.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Checklist:\u00a0 Is the Punctuation Parallel Between Parallel Clauses?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">If clauses are parallel, they should be separated with the same type of punctuation.\u00a0 For the most part, they will be independent from one another.\u00a0 For example, in the sentence &#8220;He came, he saw, and he conquered&#8221; all the clauses are separated by commas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview:\u00a0 What Is Parallel Structure?
