{"id":4584,"date":"2012-10-26T00:05:24","date_gmt":"2012-10-26T00:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/help\/?p=4584"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:31:58","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:31:58","slug":"algebra-exponential-functions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/algebra-exponential-functions\/","title":{"rendered":"Algebra: Exponential Functions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are many quantities like population, compound interest etc. \u00a0in real life which grow exponentially. \u00a0So understanding of exponential functions is\u00a0 an essential to deal with such type of things in the real life.<\/p>\n<p>If a&gt;0\u00a0 and not equal to 1 then the function f:R\u00e0R defined by f(x) = <strong><em>a<sup>x<\/sup> <\/em><\/strong>is called exponential function with base <strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If <strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong> is greater than 1, the function continuously increases in value with the increase of <strong><em>x<\/em><\/strong>. A special property of exponential functions is that the <strong>slope<\/strong> of the function also continuously increases as <em>x<\/em> increases. Instead of writing <strong><em>a<sup>x<\/sup><\/em><\/strong> we can write the same thing as <strong><em>a^x<\/em><\/strong> where the symbol <strong><em>^<\/em><\/strong> is a sign for <strong><em>power<\/em><\/strong>. Even in the computer programs and in the calculators this sign is used to represent the powers.<\/p>\n<p>Here, if we restrict the values of <strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong> to the positive numbers then the domain will be the set of all real numbers.<\/p>\n<p>The following graph represents the exponential functions f(x) and g(x) where a&gt;1 for f(x) and 0&lt;a&lt;1 for g(x).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/exponential1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4585\" title=\"exponential1\" src=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/exponential1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Exponential function is a function which is of the form <strong><em>f(x)=a<sup>x<\/sup> + b<\/em><\/strong>, where <strong><em>x<\/em><\/strong> is the exponent or power of <strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong>, where <strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong> is any constant and <strong><em>b<\/em><\/strong> is any expression.
