Limits are essential for integrals, continuity and derivatives in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/tutoring-programs\/math-tutoring\/calculus-tutoring\/\">calculus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let f(x) be a given function. Values of f(x) can be made arbitrarily close to L. We can do this by taking x sufficiently close to a, with x\u2260a, on either side of a, then we say that L is the limit of f(x) as x approaches a and we write it as <a href=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/11\/limits1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5048\" title=\"limits1\" src=\"https:\/\/SchoolTutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/11\/limits1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"37\" height=\"31\" \/><\/a>f(x) = L.<\/p>\n<p>If x\u00e0\u221e then it means that x values will go far on the right side of the horizontal axis, \u00a0x-axis. The corresponding f(x) values will be read on the vertical axis, Y-axis.
