Polynomial is made of two words \u2018poly\u2019 which means \u2018many\u2019 in Greek and \u2018nomial\u2019 which means \u2018terms\u2019. So, polynomial means \u2018many terms\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A polynomial can be composed of:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Constants<\/span> \u2013A constant is a number on its own. For example \u00a04, -3, 4\/5, 0.3<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Variables <\/span>\u00a0&#8211; A variable is usually a letter for an unknown number. For example x, y, p, r, a, and b<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Exponents<\/span> \u2013 An exponent tells how many times to use the value in a multiplication. For example 3 is exponent in x<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Terms<\/span> \u2013 A term can be either a constant or a variable, or a number and a variable multiplied together. For example 4, x, 7x, 8xy<\/p>\n<p>and these can be combined by addition, subtraction and multiplication.<\/p>\n<p>Monomial, Binomial and Trinomial are types of polynomials with one, two and three terms respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In polynomial 6x<sup>2<\/sup> + 4xy \u2013 8:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6x<sup>2<\/sup>, 4xy, 8 are terms<\/li>\n<li>2 is exponent to x<\/li>\n<li>x and y are variables<\/li>\n<li>8 is a constant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More examples of polynomials:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5x<\/li>\n<li>4x \u2013 3<\/li>\n<li>x<sup>2<\/sup> +<\/li>\n<li>6<\/li>\n<li>8a<sup>3<\/sup> + 5b<sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The term polynomial was introduced by a French mathematician Franciscus Vieta.
