{"id":6020,"date":"2013-06-10T13:14:26","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T13:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=6020"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:27:00","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:27:00","slug":"a-biology-review-of-mitosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/a-biology-review-of-mitosis\/","title":{"rendered":"A Biology Review of Mitosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview:\u00a0 The Cell Cycle<\/strong><br \/>\nMany eukaryotic cells divide through the method of mitosis.\u00a0 However, it is only one part of the cell cycle.\u00a0 A cell cycle is a recurring sequence from the beginning of one cell division all the way through to the beginning of the next mitosis.\u00a0 After mitosis, the cell grows to double its size, with increased enzyme production and chemical activity.\u00a0 Cells that are going to divide go through an additional phase that includes growth of chromosomes.\u00a0 After that part in the cell cycle, the cell goes through a second period of growth.\u00a0 For example, suppose a bean cell takes 19 hours to complete its entire cycle.\u00a0 Roughly two hours will be spent in mitosis, five in the first growth phase, seven in the growth of chromosome phase (the S phase), and five in the second growth phase, before the cycle begins all over again with new cells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prophase<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring the first phase of mitosis, or prophase, chromosomes first coil up into short rods.\u00a0 Spindle fibers that are made of protein start to align pairs of chromosomes.\u00a0 This stage actually takes most of the time during mitosis. It is usually divided into three separate periods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metaphase<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring metaphase, the chromosomes are moved around by the spindles until they all line up along the equator of the cell.\u00a0 Each \u00a0pair of chromosomes is joined at the center by a structure called the centromere, and each centromere has a separate fiber.\u00a0 The chromosomes still appear very thick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anaphase<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring this phase, the thick chromosomes (called chromatids) are pulled apart by the spindles.\u00a0 Each new half migrates to opposite poles of a very large cell.\u00a0 However, the cell itself has not completely divided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Telophase and Cytokinesis<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter the half chromosomes have moved to opposite poles, the spindle fibers vanish inside the cytoplasm.\u00a0 A new nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes.\u00a0 After the process is complete, the cytoplasm divides.\u00a0 New outer membranes encase both new cells.\u00a0 In plants, the boundaries form cell plates, creating a cell wall between the two cells.\u00a0 In animal cells, the cell membrane completely separates the two cells.<\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/tutoring-programs\/science-tutoring\/\">Science tutoring services<\/a>?
