{"id":6361,"date":"2013-10-09T04:33:26","date_gmt":"2013-10-09T04:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=6361"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:26:57","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:26:57","slug":"back-to-school-review-of-apostrophes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/back-to-school-review-of-apostrophes\/","title":{"rendered":"Back-to-School Review of Apostrophes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong><br \/>\nApostrophes are used to form contractions and possessives.\u00a0 They\u00a0 denote missing letters in contractions, and who possesses the object in possessives.\u00a0 Many possessives have homonyms, so it is important whether to know which word to use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What About Apostrophes in Contractions?<\/strong><br \/>\nApostrophes in contractions show that there are letters missing, such as<strong> can&#8217;t<\/strong>, <strong>shouldn&#8217;t<\/strong>, and <strong>he&#8217;ll<\/strong>.\u00a0 When a contraction is formed with not, such as <strong>can&#8217;t<\/strong> for <strong>can not<\/strong>, only one letter is missing.\u00a0 Contractions like <strong>he&#8217;ll<\/strong> for<strong> he will<\/strong>, <strong>she&#8217;ll<\/strong> for <strong>she will<\/strong>,<strong> we&#8217;ve<\/strong> for <strong>we ha<\/strong>ve, and <strong>they&#8217;ve<\/strong> for<strong> they h<\/strong>ave, are missing two letters.\u00a0 Contractions such as <strong>he&#8217;d<\/strong> for <strong>he would<\/strong>, <strong>she&#8217;d<\/strong> for<strong> she would<\/strong>, and <strong>they&#8217;d<\/strong> for <strong>they<\/strong> <strong>would<\/strong> are missing more than two letters.\u00a0 The contraction <strong>won&#8217;t<\/strong> for<strong> will not<\/strong> changes the spelling of the word entirely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What About Apostrophes in Singular Possessives?<\/strong><br \/>\nMost possessives for singular nouns are formed by adding the apostrophe and s, such as the boy&#8217;s bicycle, the garden&#8217;s gate, the dog&#8217;s bone, and the cat&#8217;s paw.\u00a0 The rule is the same for proper nouns, such as \u00a0Susan&#8217;s car, John&#8217;s house, and Marcia&#8217;s door.\u00a0 There are a few exceptions for biblical and classical names, such as Moses&#8217; tablets, Jesus&#8217; disciples, and Hercules&#8217; strength. \u00a0\u00a0Expressions involving time and amounts use singular possessives if the possessive is singular such as a week&#8217;s vacation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What About Apostrophes in Plural Possessives?<\/strong><br \/>\nMost plurals end in s or es.\u00a0 They add the apostrophe after the s, \u00a0such as the girls&#8217; team, the buses&#8217; lane, or the soldiers&#8217; uniforms.\u00a0 A few plurals do not end in s, such as the oxen&#8217;s yoke, the children&#8217;s game, or the sheep&#8217;s shearing, and those add the apostrophe and s.\u00a0 \u00a0Expressions involving time and amounts use plural possessives if the possessive is plural, such as four pounds&#8217; worth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which Homonym Has the Apostrophe?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe contraction <strong>it&#8217;s<\/strong> means <strong>it is<\/strong>, while the possessive<strong> its<\/strong> does not have an apostrophe.
