{"id":6382,"date":"2013-10-25T15:08:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-25T15:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=6382"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:26:57","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:26:57","slug":"chemistry-review-of-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/chemistry-review-of-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemistry Review of Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Solutions are special types of mixtures that are homogeneous.\u00a0 The particles in those mixtures are not chemically combined, so they can be separated by physical processes such as evaporation.\u00a0 Solutions exist in all three states of matter, gases, liquids, and solids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Some Types of Solutions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any time that gases do not combine chemically, they exist in a solution.\u00a0 Air is a solution of nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases.\u00a0 Sea water is a solution of water, salt, and other chemical compounds. \u00a0Carbonated water is a solution of carbon dioxide in water.\u00a0 Vinegar is a solution of acetic acid dissolved in water.\u00a0 \u00a0Alloys are special types of solid solutions.\u00a0 For example, bronze is an allow of copper, tin, and zinc.\u00a0 Sterling silver contains silver and copper.\u00a0 Since gold is a very soft metal, it is combined in alloys with copper and silver to make it hard enough to be worked into jewelry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Some Properties of Solutions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The material that is dissolved in another is called the solute, and the material that dissolves another is called the solvent.\u00a0 Usually the larger amount of material in a solution is the solvent.\u00a0 Water is the solvent in many solutions, \u00a0as well as the largest proportion of material.\u00a0 There is a larger proportion of water than of salt and other minerals in seawater.\u00a0 Solutions can vary in concentrations, so they can contain different ratios of solute to solvent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is Saturation?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saturation is the point at which no more solute can be added to the solvent.\u00a0 If one adds a teaspoon of sugar to a cup of tea, the sugar will disappear, dissolving in the tea.\u00a0 If enough sugar were added to the same cup, there would be no more solvent to dissolve the sugar, and it would remain in the bottom of the cup.\u00a0 The particles of sugar remain as sugar crystals.\u00a0 It is relatively easy to grow larger crystals, whether salt, sugar, or copper sulfates, \u00a0from supersaturated solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Factors Influence Solubility?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The key factors that influence solubility include temperature and pressure.
