{"id":6467,"date":"2013-11-25T06:12:49","date_gmt":"2013-11-25T06:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=6467"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:26:55","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:26:55","slug":"types-of-chemical-reactions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/types-of-chemical-reactions\/","title":{"rendered":"Types of Chemical Reactions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chemical reactions change one or more types of substances into completely different substances with different physical and chemical properties from the components that existed before the reaction.\u00a0 For example, a shiny copper wire exposed to air will eventually rust, because the oxygen in the air will combine with copper to form copper oxide.\u00a0 Types of reactions include, direct composition reactions, decomposition reactions, single replacement reactions, and double replacement reactions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Direct Combination Reactions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Direct combination reactions occur when one or more chemicals combine to form one product.\u00a0 For example, in the formation of table salt, sodium and chlorine combine directly to form sodium chloride.\u00a0 The product is very different than either sodium or chlorine.\u00a0 Besides chemical elements, chemical compounds can join together in direct combination reactions.\u00a0 For example, carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) reacts with water (H<sub>2<\/sub>O) to form carbonic acid (H<sub>2<\/sub>CO<sub>3<\/sub>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Decomposition Reactions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A decomposition reaction is just the opposite.\u00a0 One product is broken down into several components.\u00a0 For example, water (H<sub>2<\/sub>O) can be broken into hydrogen and oxygen.\u00a0 Similarly, calcium carbonate (CaCO<sub>3<\/sub>) can be broken down when heated into calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>).\u00a0 When mercury (II) oxide (HgO) is heated, it breaks down into mercury (Mg) and oxygen (O<sub>2<\/sub>).\u00a0 This was one of the early ways that free oxygen was produced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Single-Replacement Reactions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In single-replacement reactions, one element that is not already part of a compound replaces an element that is already a part of a compound.\u00a0 Those reactions differ from the direct combination reactions and the decomposition reactions because the free element is not part of an existing compound.\u00a0 Metals replace other metals and nonmetals replace other nonmetals.\u00a0 For example, if an iron nail (Fe) is placed in a solution of copper II sulfate (CuSO<sub>4<\/sub>), the iron will replace the copper in the copper (II) sulfate, as FeSO<sub>4<\/sub>, leaving free copper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Double-Replacement Reactions?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In double-replacement reactions, the elements in two different compounds switch places to form two different compounds.\u00a0 For example, calcium carbonate (CaCO<sub>3<\/sub>) in an antacid tablet reacts with the hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach to produce calcium chloride (CaCl<sub>2<\/sub>) and carbonic acid (H<sub>2<\/sub>CO<sub>3<\/sub>), which harmlessly decomposes further into water (H<sub>2<\/sub>O) and carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>).\u00a0 The calcium and the hydrogen replace each other in compounds.<\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/science-tutoring\/chemistry-tutoring\/\">chemistry tutoring services<\/a>?
