Overview<\/strong><\/h3>\n

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is known as the greatest writer in the English language and dramatist to the world.\u00a0 He wrote over 35 plays, including histories, comedies, and tragedies.\u00a0 His sonnets are a collection of 154, published in 1609.\u00a0 They contain some of the most beautiful love poetry ever written.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Histories<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Shakespeare wrote historical dramas that appeared in the First Folio collection.\u00a0 Most of these plays dealt with English history, such as King John<\/em> and Henry VIII<\/em>, and a complete series of plays about the Wars of the Roses:\u00a0 Richard II<\/em>, Richard III<\/em>, Henry IV<\/em> parts I and II, Henry V<\/em>, and Henry<\/em> VI<\/em>, parts I, II, and III.\u00a0 As Shakespeare was living during the reign of Elizabeth I, the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, he wrote to advance the Tudor cause and the Tudor dynasty. Richard III is seen as a monster, and the just end of the York line, \u00a0\u00a0Henry VIII<\/em> ends with the birth of Elizabeth I.\u00a0 Many of his plays that he called comedies and some of his plays that he called tragedies are also historical in nature.<\/p>\n

Comedies<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In Shakespeare\u2019s time, comedies were plays with happy endings, sometimes with happy marriages, and they were more lighthearted in tone than the histories or tragedies.\u00a0 Some of those comedies include A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>, As You Like It<\/em>, The Merry Wives of Windsor<\/em>, The Two<\/em> Gentlemen of Verona<\/em>, Much Ado about Nothing,<\/em> and Twelfth Night.<\/em>\u00a0 Some of his later plays, such as The Tempest<\/em>, Cymbeline<\/em>, and A Winter\u2019s Tale<\/em> came to be known as romances.\u00a0 Plays such as All\u2019s Well that Ends Well<\/em> and Measure for Measure<\/em> were also known as problem plays, as they mixed humor and tragedy in an unusual way.<\/p>\n

Tragedies<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Tragedies present characters in plots that blend death, madness, and murder.\u00a0 Some of Shakespeare\u2019s great tragedies were based on historical Roman figures, such as Antony and Cleopatra<\/em>, Julius Caesar<\/em>, and Coriolanus<\/em>.\u00a0 Romeo and Juliet<\/em> and Othello<\/em> used Italian narratives as sources, and King Lear<\/em> was derived from tales about ancient kings.\u00a0 Hamlet was a prince in Denmark, and Macbeth<\/em> was believed by many to carry a curse, as murder, intrigue, and deception are throughout the play.<\/p>\n

Sonnets<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Sonnets are a collection of 154 poems, published in 1609.\u00a0 The first 126 sonnets were addressed to a young man (The Fair Youth), and the last 28 were addressed to a woman (The Dark Lady).\u00a0 From the time that they were first printed, readers wondered to whom they were dedicated.\u00a0 Were the Fair Youth, the Dark Lady, and the Rival Poet real people, characterizations, or aspects of Shakespeare\u2019s culture?\u00a0 Critics have specified many different opinions on their nature.<\/p>\n
