There are three main parts to the past tense in French. The following formula represents these three parts:\u00a0<\/span>Le sujet + L\u2019auxiliaire + Le participe pass\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le Sujet<\/b><\/h3>\n

When you compose a sentence, a subject is usually included. The subject is the person(s) and\/or thing that is performing the action\/verb. In French, these are the common subjects:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Je – I<\/span><\/td>\nNous – We<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Tu – You<\/span><\/td>\nVous – You all, you<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Il – He<\/span><\/td>\nIls – They (group of males, or male(s) and female(s))<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Elle – She<\/span><\/td>\nElles – They (group of females)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
On – We<\/span><\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

L\u2019Auxiliaire<\/b><\/h3>\n

For regular ir, er, and re verbs, the auxiliary would be the verb \u201cavoir\u201d conjugated into the present tense. It is important to pay attention to the subject of the sentence to ensure that the conjugation is associated to the appropriate subject.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Le Participe Pass\u00e9<\/b><\/h3>\n

The conjugation of the infinitive verb to the past participle varies for each type of regular verb. Below are the conjugations for er, ir, and re verbs.<\/span><\/p>\n

ER verbs<\/span><\/h4>\n

Take out the -er ending and substitute it with \u201c\u00e9\u201d for all of the subjects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Example: Parler<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
J\u2019ai parl\u00e9<\/span><\/td>\nNous avons parl\u00e9<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Take out the -ir ending and substitute it with \u201ci\u201d for all of the subjects.<\/span><\/p>\n
