Knowing some of the more common literary devices can be important for understanding the things you read, and also for using in your own writing. They appear all over different types of media: books, movies, plays and music. Here are some of the most common literary devices used.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Alliteration\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several words placed either side by side or close together which begin with the same letter or sound.\u00a0The use of alliteration makes some words stand out more because the repetitive sound is very noticable, especially when read aloud.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67176 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/1520003_d0607695-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/1520003_d0607695-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/1520003_d0607695.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She sells seashells by the sea-shore.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larry&#8217;s lizard likes lounging in the sun.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim&#8217;s kid kept kicking like crazy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Metaphor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A comparison of two unrelated things to describe something using something else that does not have a literal similarity.\u00a0Taking the example of \u201clife is a rollercoaster\u201d, everyone knows that in the literal sense this statement does not make sense, however it is used to describe that life is <i>similar<\/i> to rollercoaster in that it has many ups and downs.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life is a rollercoaster.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is a walking dictionary.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My big brother is a couch potato.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The teenager&#8217;s stomach was a bottomless pit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Simile <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparison of two different things, comparable to a metaphor, except usually using the words \u201clike\u201d or \u201cas\u201d.\u00a0Similes have a comparable effect to metaphors in that they help the reader make connections between things they know the imagery the author wants to create. For example, \u201che is as busy as a bee\u201d, allows the reader to make the comparison between bees, who look for pollen all day, and the business of the person.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67175 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/bee-1296273_960_720-300x214.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/bee-1296273_960_720-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/bee-1296273_960_720-768x547.png 768w, https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/bee-1296273_960_720.png 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 184px) 100vw, 184px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is as busy as a bee<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As cold as ice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As tough as nails<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last night, I slept like a log.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Oxymoron <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two words beside each other that have opposite or contradictory meanings.\u00a0The effect an oxymoron has on the reader is that it makes them pause and think. It can make a phrase seem more dramatic.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alone together<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deafening silence<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Random order<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Personification <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a nonhuman thing is described using human characteristics.\u00a0The effect of personification is to also help the reader with visualizing the imagery the author wishes to create. Using human-like characteristics also can help readers sympathize or be more emotional towards non-human characters or objects.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wind howled its mighty objection.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time creeps up on you.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fire ran wild.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hyperbole <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration, usually used for emphasis. The exaggeration in<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67179 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/5843032561_b8bc8b990b_b-1-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/5843032561_b8bc8b990b_b-1-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/5843032561_b8bc8b990b_b-1.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 139px) 100vw, 139px\" \/>hyperbole is usually fairly obvious, for example you obviously\u00a0<\/span>are not being literal when you say you have a million things to do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nI read a million books this summer.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am so hungry I could eat a horse.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had a ton of homework.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 3 different types of irony, including:<\/span><\/h4>\n<h3><b>Verbal Irony<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone says one thing but means the opposite.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying &#8220;Oh, fantastic!&#8221; in a bad situation that is definitely not fantastic.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone gets in a car accident and says, &#8220;Guess today&#8217;s my lucky day\u2026&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Situational Irony <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When something opposite of what is expected happens.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A fire truck is on fire<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teacher fails their own test<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dramatic irony <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the audience is aware of something that the characters are not.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Examples:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Shakespear\u2019s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo thinks that Juliet has died and kills himself, while only the audience is aware that she is actually alive.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Superman, most of the characters in the comic\/show\/movies don\u2019t know who Superman\u2019s true identity \u00a0really is (Clark Kent), but the audience knows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conclusion, there are many different literary devices that can be found in writing. The effect of these literary devices is to create texts that are more vivid and interesting to read.
