Depending on the expression we are dealing with this can take many forms, but when dealing with polynomials we can often simplify an expression by expanding. Suppose we have the expression below:<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-center-displayed-equation\" style=\"line-height: 22px;\"><span class=\"ql-right-eqno\"> &nbsp; <\/span><span class=\"ql-left-eqno\"> &nbsp; <\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-dd43f48f80f1d997ce7e17155961a440_l3.png\" height=\"22\" width=\"98\" class=\"ql-img-displayed-equation quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#92;&#91;&#52;&#120;&#94;&#50;&#40;&#120;&#94;&#51;&#43;&#50;&#120;&#41;&#92;&#93;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Initially, this can look intimidating, but we can simplify it to remove the brackets and only have two terms! Remember that a term is number, variable, or product of numbers and\/or variables. In this example, we would have two terms inside the brackets (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-a5e0e31e823b4d5c9a90c0d01d5e8fcb_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#120;&#94;&#51;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"17\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/> and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-da4556c0a02b580047678d308649edf9_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#50;&#120;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"12\" width=\"19\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/>) and another term (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-01d9ff8104bad0eb00fe39e73e2f37cd_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#52;&#120;&#94;&#50;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"26\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/>) outside of the brackets. To expand this expression, we can use <strong>distribution<\/strong>.\u00a0 To do this, we multiply each term inside the brackets by the term outside of the brackets like so:<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-center-displayed-equation\" style=\"line-height: 47px;\"><span class=\"ql-right-eqno\"> &nbsp; <\/span><span class=\"ql-left-eqno\"> &nbsp; <\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-74db99f14c82c8f1432958bdb692af13_l3.png\" height=\"47\" width=\"261\" class=\"ql-img-displayed-equation quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\" &#92;&#98;&#101;&#103;&#105;&#110;&#123;&#97;&#108;&#105;&#103;&#110;&#42;&#125; &#92;&#116;&#101;&#120;&#116;&#99;&#111;&#108;&#111;&#114;&#123;&#114;&#101;&#100;&#125;&#123;&#52;&#120;&#94;&#50;&#125;&#40;&#92;&#116;&#101;&#120;&#116;&#99;&#111;&#108;&#111;&#114;&#123;&#98;&#108;&#117;&#101;&#125;&#123;&#120;&#94;&#51;&#125;&#43;&#92;&#116;&#101;&#120;&#116;&#99;&#111;&#108;&#111;&#114;&#123;&#116;&#101;&#97;&#108;&#125;&#123;&#50;&#120;&#125;&#41;&#38;&#61;&#92;&#116;&#101;&#120;&#116;&#99;&#111;&#108;&#111;&#114;&#123;&#114;&#101;&#100;&#125;&#123;&#52;&#120;&#94;&#50;&#125;&#40;&#92;&#116;&#101;&#120;&#116;&#99;&#111;&#108;&#111;&#114;&#123;&#98;&#108;&#117;&#101;&#125;&#123;&#120;&#94;&#51;&#125;&#41;&#43;&#92;&#116;&#101;&#120;&#116;&#99;&#111;&#108;&#111;&#114;&#123;&#114;&#101;&#100;&#125;&#123;&#52;&#120;&#94;&#50;&#125;&#40;&#92;&#116;&#101;&#120;&#116;&#99;&#111;&#108;&#111;&#114;&#123;&#116;&#101;&#97;&#108;&#125;&#123;&#50;&#120;&#125;&#41;&#92;&#92; &#38;&#61;&#52;&#120;&#94;&#53;&#43;&#56;&#120;&#94;&#51; &#92;&#101;&#110;&#100;&#123;&#97;&#108;&#105;&#103;&#110;&#42;&#125; \" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Our final expression (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-d62a567a8d692da821611e6b3e3ab048_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#52;&#120;&#94;&#53;&#43;&#56;&#120;&#94;&#51;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"17\" width=\"74\" style=\"vertical-align: -2px;\"\/>) now doesn&#8217;t seem so complicated, as we have only 2 terms!<\/p>\n<h2>Identifying When to Expand<\/h2>\n<p>In general, it is possible to expand an expression when there is multiplication of terms remaining to be done in the expression. For example <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-08a71fdd8b90e0df7894e765e5aafae4_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#50;&#120;&#43;&#52;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"14\" width=\"50\" style=\"vertical-align: -2px;\"\/> can not be expanded as there is no multiplication of terms to done. However, we could expand <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-9e549640643c2e3947e7bda6b03dc25f_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#40;&#120;&#43;&#49;&#41;&#40;&#120;&#43;&#50;&#41;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"19\" width=\"107\" style=\"vertical-align: -5px;\"\/> as we could multiply what is contained in each of the brackets.<\/p>\n<h2>Foiling<\/h2>\n<p>If we look at the expression we just considered (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-9e549640643c2e3947e7bda6b03dc25f_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#40;&#120;&#43;&#49;&#41;&#40;&#120;&#43;&#50;&#41;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"19\" width=\"107\" style=\"vertical-align: -5px;\"\/>), we notice that we can&#8217;t follow the same procedure as our first example (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-bd334b3fb28d76f2a46111d55915b415_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#52;&#120;&#94;&#50;&#40;&#120;&#94;&#51;&#43;&#50;&#120;&#41;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"20\" width=\"98\" style=\"vertical-align: -5px;\"\/>). To expand an expression like this, we need to introduce a process called <strong>foiling<\/strong>. Foiling is the solution! To foil, we multiply each term in one set of brackets by each term in the other set of brackets.
