Special attention to combining like terms is essential to solving them correctly.<\/p>\n<h3>Combining Like Terms<\/h3>\n<p>The expressions that contain like terms have exactly the same variables with the same exponents. For example, 3x<sup>2<\/sup>y<sup>4<\/sup> can be combined with x<sup>2<\/sup>y<sup>4<\/sup>. Similarly, 9yz<sup>2<\/sup> can be combined with -2yz<sup>2<\/sup>. However, 10xy<sup>2<\/sup> cannot be combined with 5x<sup>2<\/sup>y. Although the variables are the same in both monomials, the degrees of the variables are not. Similarly, 8xy cannot be combined with 3yz, because both terms do not have the same variables.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 1: Terms can be combined if they are like terms, but must stand alone if they are unlike terms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/06\/Like-and-unlike-terms.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" alt=\"monohybridcross\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/06\/Like-and-unlike-terms.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Addition<\/h3>\n<p>In order to add polynomials with more than one variable, add all the terms and then combine like terms. Suppose that 5xy<sup>2<\/sup> &#8211; 4x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 5x<sup>3<\/sup> + 7 is added to 8xy<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 2x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 2x<sup>3<\/sup>y + 10. The sum will equal 5xy<sup>2<\/sup> + 8xy<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 4x<sup>2<\/sup>y &#8211; 2x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 5x<sup>3<\/sup> + 2x<sup>3<\/sup>y + 7 + 10. The like terms 5xy<sup>2<\/sup> and 8xy<sup>2 <\/sup>can be combined as 13xy<sup>2<\/sup>. The like terms -4x<sup>2<\/sup>y and -2x<sup>2<\/sup>y can be combined as -6x<sup>2<\/sup>y, and the like terms 7 + 10 can be combined as 17. The unlike terms 5x<sup>3<\/sup> and 2x<sup>3<\/sup>y are part of the sum. The entire sum is 13xy<sup>2<\/sup>-6x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 5x<sup>3<\/sup> +2x<sup>3<\/sup>y + 17.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 2:\u00a0 In the final\u00a0sum or difference, like terms are combined\u00a0and\u00a0unlike terms are separate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/06\/adding-or-subtracting-like-terms.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" alt=\"monohybridcross\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/06\/adding-or-subtracting-like-terms.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Subtraction<\/h3>\n<p>In order to subtract polynomials with more than one variable, the additive inverse of the polynomial is added. This means that every term of the polynomial to be subtracted has an opposite sign. Suppose that the expression is (5x<sup>3<\/sup>y<sup>2<\/sup> \u2013 3x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 4yz + 8z<sup>2<\/sup> + 9) \u2013 (3x<sup>3<\/sup>y \u2013 x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 12z<sup>3<\/sup> + 2z<sup>2<\/sup> &#8211; 1). The additive inverse is -3x<sup>3<\/sup>y + x<sup>2<\/sup>y -12z<sup>3<\/sup> &#8211; 2z<sup>2<\/sup> + 1. Combining like terms, -3x<sup>2<\/sup>y + x<sup>2<\/sup>y is -2x<sup>2<\/sup>y, 8z<sup>2<\/sup> &#8211; 2z<sup>2<\/sup> is 6z<sup>2<\/sup>, and 9 + 1 is 10. There are a number of unlike terms, so the entire difference is 5x<sup>3<\/sup>y<sup>2<\/sup>-3x<sup>3<\/sup>y &#8211; 2x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 4yz &#8211; 12z<sup>3<\/sup> + 6z<sup>2<\/sup> + 10.<\/p>\n<h3>Multiplication<\/h3>\n<p>Polynomials with more than one variable are multiplied similar to polynomials with one variable, in that every term in one polynomial is multiplied by every term in the other polynomial. Suppose that (6x<sup>2<\/sup>y<sup>2<\/sup> + 2x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 3xy + 1) is multiplied by (x<sup>3<\/sup>y + 2y<sup>2<\/sup>). The first term, (6x<sup>2<\/sup>y<sup>2<\/sup> + 2x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 3xy + 1) (x<sup>3<\/sup>y), using the rules of exponents, is 6x<sup>5<\/sup>y<sup>3<\/sup> + 2x<sup>5<\/sup>y<sup>2<\/sup> + 3x<sup>4<\/sup>y<sup>2<\/sup> + x<sup>3<\/sup>y. The second term, (6x<sup>2<\/sup>y<sup>2<\/sup> + 2x<sup>2<\/sup>y + 3xy + 1) (2y<sup>2<\/sup>), also using the rules of exponents, is 12x<sup>2<\/sup>y<sup>4 <\/sup>+ 4x<sup>2<\/sup>y<sup>3<\/sup> + 6xy<sup>3<\/sup> + 2y<sup>2<\/sup>. If there were like terms, they would be combined.
