{"id":783,"date":"2012-02-20T16:47:10","date_gmt":"2012-02-20T16:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=783"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:33:48","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:33:48","slug":"triangle-inequality-theorem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/triangle-inequality-theorem\/","title":{"rendered":"Triangle Inequality Theorem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Triangle Inequality<\/strong> <strong>theorem <\/strong>states that:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong><em>The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Otherwise, a triangle cannot be created.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Below is triangle ABC, with sides AB, BC and AC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/triangle-inequality-fig.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-784\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/triangle-inequality-fig.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to triangle inequality theorem,<\/p>\n<p>AB + BC &gt; AC<\/p>\n<p>AC + BC &gt; AB<\/p>\n<p>AC + AB &gt; BC<\/p>\n<p>Example 1:<\/p>\n<p>Could a triangle have sides of lengths 4, 5 and 8?<\/p>\n<p>4 + 5 &gt; 8<\/p>\n<p>5 + 8 &gt; 4<\/p>\n<p>4 + 8 &gt; 5<\/p>\n<p>As all three combinations satisfy the theorem the triangle is possible.<\/p>\n<p>Example 2:<\/p>\n<p>Could a triangle have sides of lengths 2, 5 and 8?<\/p>\n<p>2 + 8 &gt; 5\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 X<\/p>\n<p>2 + 5 &gt; 8\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 X<\/p>\n<p>5 + 8 &gt; 2<\/p>\n<p>If any of the combinations does not satisfy the theorem the triangle cannot be created of given lengths.<\/p>\n<p>SchoolTutoring Academy is the premier educational services company for K-12 and college students.
