Close reading and editing can eliminate many of them before an essay is in final form.<\/p>\n<h3>Redundancy<\/h3>\n<p>Some types of wordiness include redundant words or phrases. \u00a0In the sentence, \u201cThe balloons were red in color,\u201d red is already a color. Simply state that the balloons were red. Similarly, the phrase \u201csnow continued to keep on falling\u201d could be more simply stated as \u201csnow continued falling.\u201d Something continued is also keeping on. \u201cWe left the park because of the rainy weather\u201d could be recast as \u201cWe left the park because of the rain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/redundant-phrases.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/redundant-phrases.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Passive Voice<\/h3>\n<p>Compare a sentence such as \u201cThe boat was sailed by John\u201d with \u201cJohn sailed the boat.\u201d The first sentence is in the passive voice, while the second sentence is in the active voice. In the passive voice, the one doing the action is obscured into a prepositional phrase. Both sentences describe the same activity, but the sentence in the active voice expresses direct action with fewer words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/active-vs-passive-voice.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/09\/active-vs-passive-voice.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Weak \u201cTo Be\u201d Verbs<\/h3>\n<p>Compare sentences such as \u201cThe cost of the book is twenty dollars\u201d with \u201cThe book costs twenty dollars.\u201d Both sentences describe the same activity, but the first sentence uses a static form of the verb \u201cto be\u201d, while the second sentence replaces <strong>is<\/strong> with <strong>costs<\/strong>. Sentences using passive construction add a form of the verb \u201cto be\u201d as an auxiliary verb. During a final edit, check sentences for forms of the verb \u201cto be\u201d to make sure that they are not in the passive voice or hiding the action.<\/p>\n<h3>Unnecessary Phrases<\/h3>\n<p>Some sentences have phrases that add nothing to the meaning of the sentence.
