{"id":8819,"date":"2016-01-11T03:39:46","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T03:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=8819"},"modified":"2016-01-11T03:39:46","modified_gmt":"2016-01-11T03:39:46","slug":"science-review-of-deserts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/science-review-of-deserts\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Review of Deserts"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Desert lands generally receive less than 10 inches of rainfall per year, and sometimes receive no rainfall in a year.\u00a0 Desert climates may be hot or cold, and the topography may be flat or mountainous.<\/p>\n<h3>Polar Desert<\/h3>\n<p>The continent of Antarctica is considered a polar desert.\u00a0 It receives less than 8 inches of rainfall on the average, and the Dry Valleys are not covered by snow and ice, but exist as barren rock.\u00a0 Few forms of vegetation can live in such extreme conditions.\u00a0 There are some lichen-forming fungi, snow algae, and various forms of hardy bacteria.\u00a0 Some parts of the Arctic Basin also receive less than 6 inches of precipitation, and are also technically considered a desert.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/polar-desert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/polar-desert.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Sahara, Arabian, and Syrian Desert<\/h3>\n<p>The Sahara Desert is the third largest desert area in the world, and is the largest hot desert.\u00a0 It is located in northern Africa, and includes some of the hottest areas during the summer, with average temperatures over 100 degrees F (38\u00b0 C).\u00a0 Most of the Sahara consists of barren, rocky areas where most of the sand has blown away, although large sand dunes cover other areas, as well as salt flats.\u00a0 The plants and animals that live on the desert conserve what little water there is.\u00a0 The Arabian Desert and the Syrian Desert cover most of the Middle East.\u00a0 Some of the land is rocky and some is covered with sand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Sahara-Desert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Sahara-Desert.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Deserts in Asia and Australia<\/h3>\n<p>The Gobi Desert is a large desert area in Mongolia and Northern China. Clouds carrying rain from the Indian Ocean cannot cross the Himalayas, so the rain shadow area has less than 8 inches of precipitation in a year.\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes snow falls on the sand dunes during the winter.\u00a0 By contrast, much of the desert land in Australia is hot, with the hardiest shrubs and grasses growing along sand dunes.\u00a0 Small marsupials and lizards survive the heat by burrowing into the sand.<\/p>\n<h3>Deserts in North and South America<\/h3>\n<p>Some of the desert area in North and Central America include regions that are parts of the states of Utah, Nevada, California, southern Idaho, and Arizona, as well as parts of Mexico.\u00a0 These desert lands contain many more familiar species of cactus, sagebrush, and other scrub vegetation, as well as lizards and many different varieties of snakes.\u00a0 The Patagonian Deserts in Chile and Argentina are in the rain shadow of the Andes Mountains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/deserts-with-cactus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/deserts-with-cactus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/science-tutoring\/\">science tutoring services<\/a>?
