{"id":8823,"date":"2016-01-18T05:24:20","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T05:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=8823"},"modified":"2016-01-18T05:24:20","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T05:24:20","slug":"english-review-of-writing-the-admissions-essay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/english-review-of-writing-the-admissions-essay\/","title":{"rendered":"English Review of Writing the Admissions Essay"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Many selective colleges and universities ask prospective students to write an essay as part of their application for admissions.\u00a0 Usually, there are guidelines, such as word length, a quotation, or a common question.\u00a0 The goals of the essay are for the admissions officer to see how well students can express themselves in writing, and reveal themselves as interesting potential students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/college-application-essay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/college-application-essay.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Choosing a Topic<\/h3>\n<p>Most of the time, college applications contain essay questions that are open-ended, but specific.\u00a0 Some common application questions ask students to describe an experience, achievement or event that stood out to them; a person who has influenced their life; a character in fiction, an historical figure, or a creative work and how it has impacted personal philosophy; or any other topic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/writing-on-a-laptop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/writing-on-a-laptop.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Write About Yourself<\/h3>\n<p>Admissions officers are looking for student essays that reflect individuality.\u00a0 Maybe you haven\u2019t spent a summer in a foreign country or received awards for outstanding community service or heroism.\u00a0 However, even mundane life experiences can be made interesting.\u00a0 Write about something that excites you, whether it be making art or music, playing sports, hobbies, or academic interests.<\/p>\n<h3>Show, Don\u2019t Tell<\/h3>\n<p>Engage the senses to engage the reader.\u00a0 If your passion is for hiking in the mountains, describe the feel of the warm sun on your back, the smell of the pine forests, the taste of the icy water from a mountain stream, the sight of the glaciers and peaks; and the cries of hawks as they glide by.\u00a0 Draw the reader into the scene, whether it is onstage presenting a drama or traveling in a foreign land.<\/p>\n<h3>Proofread Carefully<\/h3>\n<p>Most writers cannot write a perfect essay on the first draft.\u00a0 Even with spell-check as part of the word processing program, words remain that are not the correct ones, such as \u201cthere\u201d for \u201ctheir\u201d, typos that are still words, or when a word is left out of the sentence.\u00a0 Wordiness can create problems, as well as weak forms of the verb \u201cto be\u201d, strings of adjectives; run-on sentences; and mixing up tenses.\u00a0 Leave enough time to write and rewrite, ask someone else to read the draft, and feel free to go in a different direction if one attempt doesn\u2019t say what you want it to say.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/editing-for-spelling.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/editing-for-spelling.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/english-tutors\/\">English tutoring services<\/a>?
