{"id":8873,"date":"2016-03-20T19:29:49","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T19:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=8873"},"modified":"2016-03-20T19:29:49","modified_gmt":"2016-03-20T19:29:49","slug":"science-review-of-chemical-equations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/science-review-of-chemical-equations\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Review of Chemical Equations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Chemical equations are shorthand descriptions of the reactions between substances.\u00a0 They include the chemicals that react, the conditions for reaction, the products of the reaction, and the amounts of all substances involved.<\/p>\n<h3>Word Equations<\/h3>\n<p>In the simplest form, chemical equations can be expressed in words.\u00a0 For example, the substance methane reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water.\u00a0 The reactants are methane and oxygen and the products are carbon dioxide and water, such that methane + oxygen \u2192 carbon dioxide and water.\u00a0 The arrow pointing to the products of the reaction is another way to say \u201cforms\u201d or \u201cproduces.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Chemical Equations<\/h3>\n<p>Although word equations are an improvement over writing a paragraph describing reactions between chemicals, they still lack information, such as the chemical formulas that make up the compounds involved in the reaction and their quantities, their quantities, and details about the reactions themselves.\u00a0 The word methane can be replaced by its chemical formula CH<sub>4<\/sub>, oxygen by its molecular state O<sub>2<\/sub>, the term carbon dioxide by its chemical formula CO<sub>2<\/sub>, and water by its chemical formula H<sub>2<\/sub>O. Chemical formulas already state more information than the word forms.\u00a0 A molecule of methane consists of 4 atoms of hydrogen for each atom of carbon; a molecule of carbon dioxide, of two atoms of oxygen for each atom of carbon; a molecule of water, two atoms of hydrogen for each atom of oxygen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/Chemical-equation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/Chemical-equation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Unbalanced Chemical Equations<\/h3>\n<p>After writing a word equation, make sure than the chemical formula for each substance is correct , the reactants are on the left side of the equation, and the products are on the right side of the equation, so that methane + oxygen \u2192 carbon dioxide + water becomes CH<sub>4<\/sub> +O<sub>2<\/sub> \u2192CO<sub>2<\/sub> +H<sub>2<\/sub>O.\u00a0 The process is not complete.\u00a0 The reactants contain one carbon atom, 4 hydrogen atoms, and two oxygen atoms.\u00a0 The products contain one carbon atom, three oxygen atoms, and two hydrogen atoms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/balanced-and-unbalanced-chemical-equations.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/balanced-and-unbalanced-chemical-equations.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Balanced Chemical Equations<\/h3>\n<p>The Law of Conservation of Mass states that there must be the same amount and type of each substance on both sides of the equation.\u00a0 However, in the unbalanced chemical equation, there are the same number of carbon atoms in CH<sub>4<\/sub> and CO<sub>2, <\/sub>but not the same amount of hydrogen and oxygen atoms on both sides of the equation.\u00a0 There are already 4 hydrogen atoms in CH<sub>4<\/sub>, so in order to put 4 hydrogen atoms in the products have 2 atoms of H<sub>2<\/sub>O.\u00a0 The chemical equation is then CH<sub>4<\/sub> +O<sub>2<\/sub>\u2192CO<sub>2<\/sub> +2 H<sub>2<\/sub>O.\u00a0 Oxygen is still unbalanced, as there are 2 atoms of oxygen on the reactant side and 4 on the product side.\u00a0 Multiply the O<sub>2<\/sub> by 2 so that the entire reaction is CH<sub>4<\/sub> + 2 O<sub>2<\/sub>\u2192 CO<sub>2 <\/sub>+ 2 H<sub>2<\/sub>O.\u00a0 There is one atom of carbon, 4 atoms of hydrogen, and 4 atoms of oxygen on both sides of the chemical equation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/balanced-chemical-equation.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/balanced-chemical-equation.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/science-tutoring\/\">science tutoring services<\/a>?
