{"id":8887,"date":"2016-03-26T21:41:16","date_gmt":"2016-03-26T21:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=8887"},"modified":"2016-03-26T21:41:16","modified_gmt":"2016-03-26T21:41:16","slug":"english-review-of-adjectives-and-adverbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/english-review-of-adjectives-and-adverbs\/","title":{"rendered":"English Review of Adjectives and Adverbs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Adjectives are used to modify nouns, while adverbs are used to modify verbs, other adjectives, and \u00a0adverbs.\u00a0 Adjectives and adverbs often\u00a0have different forms.<\/p>\n<h3>Adjectives and Adverb Forms<\/h3>\n<p>Most adverb forms have the form \u2013ly, such as moved slowly, ran quickly, or laughed loudly.\u00a0 The corresponding adjectives do not have the \u2013ly ending, such as the slow train, the quick rabbit, or the loud party.\u00a0 The difference in which form to use is whether the word modifies the verb, such as laughed loudly, or whether the word modifies a noun such as the loud party.\u00a0 Some words such as <strong>far<\/strong>, <strong>fast<\/strong>, <strong>first<\/strong> are the same whether they are used as an adverb or an adjective.\u00a0 For example, in the sentence \u201cThey traveled far across the mountains,\u201d <strong>far<\/strong> is an adverb, modifying <strong>traveled<\/strong>, but in the sentence \u201cThe far mountain range has sharp peaks,\u201d <strong>far<\/strong> is an adjective, modifying <strong>mountains<\/strong>.\u00a0 However, verbs describing senses such as <strong>feel<\/strong>, <strong>look<\/strong>, <strong>smell<\/strong>, <strong>sound<\/strong>, and <strong>taste<\/strong>, as well as linking verbs such as <strong>appear<\/strong>,<strong> be<\/strong>, <strong>become<\/strong>, and <strong>seem<\/strong>, take an adjective to describe the subject, such as \u201cThe child feels tired,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThat paint looks dry,\u201d or \u201cThe ice seems frozen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/adverbs-vs.-adjectives.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/03\/adverbs-vs.-adjectives.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Possessive Forms<\/h3>\n<p>Possessive adjectives include adjectives much as <strong>my<\/strong>, <strong>our<\/strong>, <strong>your<\/strong>, <strong>their<\/strong>, <strong>his<\/strong>, <strong>her<\/strong>, and <strong>its<\/strong> when modifying nouns.\u00a0 For example, in the sentence, \u201cTheir road is rough, \u201c<strong>their<\/strong> modifies the noun<strong> road<\/strong>, and \u201cOur team won the championship,\u201d <strong>our<\/strong> modifies the noun <strong>team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Comparisons<\/h3>\n<p>An adjective such as <strong>fine<\/strong>\u00a0can be made comparative by adding \u2013er, such as <strong>finer<\/strong>, when comparing two things, such as \u201cThe blue cloth is finer than the red cloth.\u201d\u00a0 It can be made superlative by adding the suffix \u2013est, when comparing three or more things, such as, \u201cThe white cloth is the finest of all three.\u201d\u00a0 Most regular adjectives, such as <strong>friendly<\/strong>, form comparisons that way, such as <strong>friendlier<\/strong>, <strong>friendliest<\/strong>, or<strong> fast<\/strong>, <strong>faster<\/strong>, <strong>fastest<\/strong>.
