Overview<\/h3>\n

Quotation marks are used in many different ways in the English language, in direct quotations, and around the titles of articles, poems, and other shorter works.\u00a0 Italics are used with the titles of longer works and in other specific contexts.<\/p>\n

Quotation Marks and Direct Quotations<\/h3>\n

Direct quotations are enclosed with double quotation marks.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s really cold in this room,\u201d she said after the heat in the building was turned off.\u00a0 If a quotation is indirect, no quotation marks are used.\u00a0 After the heat in the building was turned off, she thought that the room was really cold.\u00a0 If a direct quotation is used within another direct quotation, single quotation marks are used to enclose it.\u00a0 \u201cDid you hear the announcement \u2018All staff should meet in the main conference room at 3:00\u2019 that came over the loudspeaker?\u201d my coworker asked.<\/p>\n

Quotation Marks and Titles<\/h3>\n

Quotation marks are used for the titles of articles, short poems, speeches, stories, and songs. The article \u201cVintage Plane Crashes in Hudson River\u201d appeared on the front page of the newspaper.\u00a0 Robert Frost\u2019s poem \u201cStopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening\u201d is one of my favorite poems.\u00a0 Did you see the video that some students made to Macklemore\u2019s \u201cDowntown\u201d?<\/p>\n

Italics in Titles<\/h3>\n

Italics are used for the titles of books, long poems, works of art, long musical compositions, newspapers, periodicals, motion pictures, plays, and radio and television series. We are reading Lord of the Flies<\/i> by William Goulding.\u00a0 She memorized Edna St. Vincent Millay\u2019s long poem Renascence<\/i>. The Magic Flute<\/i> by Mozart is one of my favorite operas. \u00a0Did you read yesterday\u2019s New York Times<\/i>?\u00a0 Eddie Redmayne won the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything<\/i>.\u00a0 Do you ever watch House of Cards<\/i>?<\/p>\n

Other Uses of Italics<\/h3>\n

Italics are used when a word is spoken of as a word.\u00a0 Did you mean affect<\/i> or effect<\/i>?\u00a0 They are also used sparingly to emphasize particular words or expressions.\u00a0 Students who register for the trigonometry class should<\/i> take geometry first.\u00a0 Did you spend all<\/i> the money?<\/p>\n
