{"id":8967,"date":"2016-05-30T21:23:39","date_gmt":"2016-05-30T21:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=8967"},"modified":"2016-05-31T12:52:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-31T12:52:28","slug":"english-review-of-dashes-and-parentheses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/english-review-of-dashes-and-parentheses\/","title":{"rendered":"English Review of Dashes and Parentheses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>Dashes are often used as punctuation to note a change in direction, while parentheses are used to set off material within a sentence.\u00a0 Both dashes and parentheses can have the effect of introducing new ideas that are not essential, but add explanation.<\/p>\n<h3>Dashes<\/h3>\n<p>Dashes are often used when writers wish to signal a change in direction, as when a character is thinking about one thing and then another.\u00a0 The woman dyed her hair red\u2014 as red as her Corvette, rather than auburn.\u00a0 Similarly, a dash can be used when there is a break in the sentence.\u00a0 I wish you would \u2013 never mind.\u00a0 Dashes can also be used between dates or numbers instead of the word to, such as she took the class U.S. History 1880\u20141950.\u00a0 Problems 1-40 are in tonight\u2019s homework.\u00a0 Rows 1-10 in the auditorium are reserved for season ticket holders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/dashes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/dashes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Parentheses<\/h3>\n<p>Parentheses are most often used to set off material within a sentence that adds explanation.\u00a0 The shipment will arrive (once payment has been made) in 3-5 business days.\u00a0 Classes will start again in September (and that seems so far away).\u00a0 A sentence that uses parentheses will have both an opening and a closing parenthesis ().\u00a0 It is easy to overlook the closing parenthesis until the final proofreading.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/parentheses-examples.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/parentheses-examples.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"343\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Other Uses of Parentheses<\/h3>\n<p>Parentheses may also be used to enclose numbers or letters when they mark the divisions of a subject.\u00a0 Please bring the following to the final exam: (a) more than one #2 pencil, (b) a blue book, (c) a calculator, and (d) graph paper. \u00a0Parentheses are also used for clarification, as in the meetings of the Bellingham (WA) City Council are held in chambers, while the meetings of the Bellingham (MA) City Council are held in City Hall. \u00a0If an exclamation point or question mark within a sentence is enclosed in parentheses within a sentence, it might be intended as irony or sarcasm.\u00a0 The lecture was so exciting (?) than many students fell asleep.<\/p>\n<h3>Brackets<\/h3>\n<p>Although brackets may be more familiar in mathematical expressions, they are also used in English sentences.\u00a0 They are often used to insert details not included in a quotation, such as the date, author, or other comments.\u00a0 For example, in the following year [1969] astronauts landed on the moon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/brackets.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/05\/brackets.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/english-tutors\/\">English tutoring services<\/a>?
