{"id":9029,"date":"2016-07-04T18:27:05","date_gmt":"2016-07-04T18:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/?p=9029"},"modified":"2016-07-04T18:27:05","modified_gmt":"2016-07-04T18:27:05","slug":"math-review-of-graphing-systems-of-equations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/math-review-of-graphing-systems-of-equations\/","title":{"rendered":"Math Review of Graphing Systems of Equations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>One of the ways to solve systems of equations is by graphing the equations on the same coordinate plane.\u00a0 By graphing the equations, it is possible to tell whether they have no solutions in common, one solution in common, or an infinite number of solutions in common.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/systems-of-equations.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/systems-of-equations.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>No Solutions in Common<\/h3>\n<p>These linear equations are also known as parallel lines, those with the same slope and different y-intercepts.\u00a0 Another way to describe them is that the solutions of that particular system are inconsistent.\u00a0 For example, suppose that the equations are y = 3x \u2013 1 and 2y = 6x +4.\u00a0 Solving the second equation, y = 3x +2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Both equations have the same slope, but their y-intercepts are different, so they are parallel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/graphing-parallel-lines.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/graphing-parallel-lines.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>One Solution in Common<\/h3>\n<p>Some of these linear equations are perpendicular lines, where the product of their slopes is equal to -1, but lines can also meet at other angles and still have one solution in common.\u00a0 A system of equations that has at least one solution in common is consistent.\u00a0 Both equations have one point in common, although it is the only solution of the system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/solving-systems-by-graphing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/solving-systems-by-graphing.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Identifying Solutions<\/h3>\n<p>One way to identify if a particular point is a solution of both equations in a system is to see if its coordinates solve both equations.\u00a0 For example, check to see if a point with the coordinates (1, 2) is a solution of the system y= x +1 and 2x +y = 4.\u00a0 The point is a solution of the equation y = x +1, because 2 = 1 +1, and it is also a solution of the equation 2x +y = 4, because 2 +2 = 4.\u00a0 It is a solution of that system of equations.\u00a0 A point with the coordinates (5, 6) is a solution of the equation y=x +1, but is it a solution of the equation 2x +y = 4?\u00a0 10 +6 is equal to 16, which is not equal to 4.\u00a0 The point (5, 6) is not a solution of that system of equations.<\/p>\n<h3>All Solutions in Common<\/h3>\n<p>Some systems of equations have all solutions in common, so that any solution of one equation is also a solution of the other equation.\u00a0 The lines coincide along the same graph.\u00a0 They are both consistent and dependent.\u00a0 Suppose the system of equations is x +y =9 and 3x +3y =27.\u00a0 The simplest form of 3x +3y = 27 is x +y =9, just by dividing every member of the equation 3x +3y =27 by 3.<\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/tutoring-programs\/math-tutoring\/\">math tutoring services<\/a>?
