The most commonly recognized metalloids include the elements boron (B), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), and tellurium (Te).<\/p>\n<h3>Metalloids<\/h3>\n<p>Elements are commonly classified as either metals, nonmetals, or metalloids.\u00a0 Most metalloids are brittle (a non-metallic property), act as semiconductors of electricity, and have a metallic luster (also a metallic property).\u00a0 They are solid at room temperature. In chemical reactions, they often act more like nonmetals, but they form alloys like metals. Whether elements are classified as metalloids or not depend upon the chemist\u2019s decision.\u00a0\u00a0 For example, polonium (Po), and astatine (At) are sometimes included in the list of metalloids, because of their chemical properties and their location on the periodic table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/metalloids.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/metalloids.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Semiconductor Properties<\/h3>\n<p>Metalloids are good semiconductors, which mean that they are between the electrical conductivity of metals and materials used for insulation.\u00a0 Semiconductors can conduct electricity under some conditions, so electrical current can be controlled. Semiconductor chips, transistors, and other electronic parts form integrated circuits for everything from computers to cell phones.\u00a0 The metalloids, especially silicon, boron, germanium, and compounds of arsenic and antimony, are natural semiconductors. Silicon and germanium revolutionized the electronics and computer industries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/Silicon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/Silicon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Alloys<\/h3>\n<p>The metalloids are often too brittle to be used as pure substances, but form many useful alloys.\u00a0 For example, boron is used in alloys with steel and with nickel for welding components.\u00a0 Germanium is alloyed with silver to make tarnish-resistant sterling silver.\u00a0 Pewter is an alloy of tin and antimony.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Uses of Metalloids<\/h3>\n<p>Many compounds of metalloids are highly toxic, such as those containing arsenic and antimony.\u00a0 However, other compounds can be used as disinfectants and antiviral agents.\u00a0 Compounds of boron are used as catalysts in many chemical reactions.\u00a0 Many compounds are used to form glassware, especially in chemical and industrial uses, such as optical fibers.\u00a0\u00a0 Silicon and boron compounds are also used in fireworks, as they are less toxic than some other compounds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/periodic-table-with-metalloids.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6954 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/periodic-table-with-metalloids.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/science-tutoring\/\">science tutoring services<\/a>?
