The decision to use <em>which<\/em> or <em>that<\/em> is dependent on whether the phrase containing said detail intends to add distinction or embellishment to the subject of the sentence.<\/p>\n<h4>Restrictive Clause, <em>That<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>When a detail clause is pivotal to defining the subject of a sentence it should be introduced flatly, abruptly and without a comma, following the subject with the word <em>that<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The dog <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">that barked too often<\/span> was given away by its owner. (<em>restrictive clause.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This underlined <em>clause<\/em> isn\u2019t deemed <em>restrictive<\/em> due to a strongly inferred reasoning for the owner\u2019s decision to put down the dog, but because the writer is intending (in one fashion or another) to distinguish this \u2018dog\u2019 from another dog (or dogs.) Therefore it is said to be <em>restricting<\/em> the possible meaning of the subject noun, \u2018dog.\u2019<\/p>\n<h4>Non-Restrictive Clause, <em>Which<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>On the other hand, when a detail clause serves to embellish the subject of the sentence, it should be formed as a non-restrictive clause; prefaced by <em>which,<\/em> and bracketed by commas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The barking dog, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">which lived to be a ripe old age<\/span>, was given away by its owner.
