Overview:\u00a0 What Are Pronouns?<\/strong>
\nPronouns are word forms that substitute for nouns.\u00a0 They differ from nouns in that the correct pronoun form depends on the function it takes within the sentence.\u00a0 Nouns in English only change form when they are possessive.\u00a0 Otherwise, the same word forms are used whether they are the subject or the object. Compare the sentences, “Jane hit the ball,” “The ball hit Jane,” and “The ball is Jane’s.”<\/p>\n

What Are Singular and Plural Pronouns?<\/strong>
\nSingular pronouns such as I,<\/strong> you<\/strong>, he<\/strong>, she<\/strong>, or\u00a0it<\/strong> substitute for singular nouns and must agree with singular verbs, while plural pronouns such as we<\/strong>, you<\/strong>, and they<\/strong> substitute for plural nouns and must agree with plural verbs.\u00a0 For example, compare the sentence, “He goes to school”, with “They go to school.”\u00a0 The pronoun you<\/strong> is the same form for singular and plural in English, and the meaning depends on context.<\/p>\n

What Are Subject Pronouns?<\/strong>
\nSubject pronouns such as I,<\/strong> you<\/strong>, he<\/strong>, she<\/strong>, it<\/strong>, we<\/strong> and they<\/strong> serve as the subject forms, also called the nominative case.\u00a0 For example, in a simple sentence like “John and I went to the store,” the pronoun I is part of the subject.\u00a0 In formal written English, verb forms of to be use subject pronouns, such as ” It is I” or “The winners were Tim and she.”<\/p>\n

What Are Object Pronouns?<\/strong>
\nObject pronouns include me<\/strong>, you<\/strong>, him<\/strong>, her<\/strong>, it<\/strong>, us<\/strong>, and them<\/strong>, also called the objective case.\u00a0 They are used when the pronoun is used as the object of any verb or preposition.\u00a0 For example, in the sentence, “John raced them yesterday”, the pronoun them is an object.\u00a0 In addition, after a preposition such as between, the objective pronoun is used, such as “between you and me” rather than “between you and I.”<\/p>\n

What Are Possessive Pronouns?<\/strong>
\nPossessive pronouns include my,<\/strong> \u00a0mine<\/strong>, \u00a0your<\/strong>, yours<\/strong>, his<\/strong>, her<\/strong>, her<\/strong>s, its, our<\/strong>, \u00a0ours<\/strong>, and their<\/strong>, \u00a0theirs<\/strong>.\u00a0 They are used to show ownership.\u00a0 The possessive pronoun its is not the same as the contraction it’s (meaning it is), and their is not the same as the adverb there or the contraction they’re.\u00a0 For example, “Their car is parked in the next block” but “The red car is parked over there.”\u00a0 Sometimes possessive pronouns can be used by themselves, such as “That blue car is hers, not his.”<\/p>\n
