{"id":6014,"date":"2013-06-07T14:28:47","date_gmt":"2013-06-07T14:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/?p=6014"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:27:00","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:27:00","slug":"biology-review-of-cell-division","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2013\/06\/07\/biology-review-of-cell-division\/","title":{"rendered":"Biology Review of Cell Division"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview:\u00a0 The Purposes of Cell Division<\/strong><br \/>\nMulticellular organisms come from processes of cell division.\u00a0 Overall, cell division accounts for organism growth and repair, as well as types of reproduction.\u00a0 Eukaryotes are able to divide and reproduce copies of themselves because of enhanced genetic material in their larger and more specialized nuclei.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Growth and Repair<\/strong><br \/>\nMulticellular organisms are able to grow by increasing the number of cells, as new cells join existing cells.\u00a0 In addition, cell division allows organisms to produce new cells to replace those that are worn out or damaged.\u00a0 For example, while a skin wound heals, new skin cells grow to replace those that have been lost through the wound. \u00a0Some cells, such as skin cells, continue to divide and grow throughout life, where others do not reproduce easily or at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fission<\/strong><br \/>\nAsexual reproduction involves only one parent.\u00a0 In the simplest type, binary fission, one cell splits into two.\u00a0 A single chromosome lines up and duplicates itself.\u00a0 The new double chromosome attaches itself to the cell membrane, a new membrane is formed between the two chromosomes, and it then becomes two new identical cells.\u00a0 In some forms of fission, one chromosome from the doubled pair will result in an active cell and the other one will form a spore.\u00a0 The spore will remain inactive until conditions are right for it to sprout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Budding, Propagation, and \u00a0Regeneration<\/strong><br \/>\nSome plant species reproduce asexually by dividing first, then growing separately.\u00a0 Others, such as strawberries, some houseplants, and potatoes, grow new plants from parts or cuttings of the original plant.\u00a0 For example, potato plants grow from small pieces of potato containing an eye.\u00a0 Some species, such as starfish, have the ability to regenerate a new limb if one is broken off. If a starfish is cut into several pieces, then thrown back into the water, each part will grow into an identical starfish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sexual Reproduction<\/strong><br \/>\nSexual reproduction occurs when a gamete from each parent joins to form a zygote.\u00a0 More variation of characteristics is possible in the offspring, as genetic material from each parent combines.\u00a0 The offspring is not identical to either parent, but combines traits from both.\u00a0 In addition, each organism in the next generation are different from one another.<\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/tutoring-programs\/science-tutoring\/\">Science tutoring services<\/a>?
