Overview:\u00a0 Why Modifiers?<\/strong>
\nIf sentences consisted of only nouns and verbs, they would be telegraphic and lack color and specific information.\u00a0 Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns, and adverbs modify verbs, other adverbs, and adjectives.\u00a0 They make writing more vivid and more clear.\u00a0 While choosing the right word may be the difference between lightning and the lightning bug, choosing the right adjectives and adverbs often make the point complete.<\/p>\n

Adjectives in Review<\/strong>
\nAdjectives are words that clarify nouns and pronouns.\u00a0 They answer questions about quantity, kind, and description.\u00a0 In English, they usually come before the words they modify, but they sometimes come after.\u00a0 (In other languages, such as Spanish, French, and Hebrew,\u00a0 they often come after the nouns.)\u00a0 Sometimes nouns can also be used as adjectives, such as “bullet train” or “geometry class”.\u00a0 Some proper nouns and possessives can also act as adjectives, such as “Olympic medal” or “Canada’s provinces”.\u00a0 In addition, adjectives can be compound words, such as “well-tempered clavier” or “railroad crossings”.<\/p>\n

Pronouns Used as Adjectives<\/strong>
\nPossessive pronouns serve as adjectives because they can modify a noun by showing ownership.\u00a0 In the sentence\u00a0 “Her beaker contained the solution” the word her<\/strong> specifies which beaker.\u00a0 Similarly, pronouns such as this<\/strong>, that<\/strong>, these<\/strong>, and those<\/strong> can give more information about the nouns they modify. \u00a0A phrase such as “these\u00a0 calculators” shows which ones are meant.<\/p>\n

Adverbs in Review<\/strong>
\nWhen adverbs modify verbs, they specify particular kinds of information, such as place, time, in what way, or to what extent.\u00a0 When adverbs modify other adverbs or adjectives, they define what extent. Sometimes adverbs can be strung together without adding much meaning.\u00a0 For example, a description such as “The sunrise was really very tremendously incredibly beautiful” doesn’t add much intensity to the beauty of the sunrise.<\/p>\n

Forming Adjectives and Adverbs<\/strong>
\nWhile adjectives modify only nouns and pronouns, adverbs can modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.\u00a0 Sometimes words are the same whether they are adjectives or adverbs.\u00a0 The adjective late<\/strong> in a late evening<\/strong> is the same word as the adverb in the sentence “I awoke late”.\u00a0 Sometimes adjectives and adverbs take different forms, such as in the phrase “the bright sun” and “The sun shone brightly”.<\/p>\n
