{"id":6313,"date":"2013-09-09T13:20:50","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T13:20:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/?p=6313"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:26:58","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:26:58","slug":"introduction-to-the-periodic-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2013\/09\/09\/introduction-to-the-periodic-table\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to the Periodic Table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview:\u00a0 What Is the Periodic Table?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe periodic table is a grouping of chemical elements arranged in families based upon their chemical properties.\u00a0 The most common form of the periodic table has 18 such vertical groupings, known as families, and 7 horizontal rows known as periods.\u00a0 There are usually two rows that are placed at the bottom, but that is for convenience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Metals?<\/strong><br \/>\nMost elements are classified as metals.\u00a0 Many of them, such as gold, silver, and iron, are easily recognized as metals.\u00a0 They have a common luster, can be drawn into wire or hammered into sheets, such as copper wire or aluminum foil.\u00a0 Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.\u00a0 They are usually solids at room temperature, except for mercury, which is a liquid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Nonmetals?<\/strong><br \/>\nNonmetals are poor conductors of heat and electricity.\u00a0 Many, such as hydrogen, helium, oxygen, and nitrogen, are gases at room temperature.\u00a0 Solid elements, such as carbon and sulfur, are brittle.\u00a0 A few nonmetals, such as bromine, are liquid at room temperature.\u00a0 Hydrogen and helium are the most common elements in the universe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Metalloids?<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are 6 elements, boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, selenium, antimony, and tellurium, that are neither metals nor nonmetals.\u00a0 They share some properties of both.\u00a0 For example, arsenic compounds are shiny like metals, but are brittle like nonmetals.\u00a0 Some are semiconductors, and can be used in microelectronics as computer chips.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are New Elements Being Discovered?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe heaviest radioactive elements are the products of radioactive decay, with progressively shorter half-lives.\u00a0 Some of them, such as neptunium, plutonium, americium, curium, berkelium, and californium, were first discovered in the laboratory, and then later in uranium-rich rocks in nature.\u00a0 Some of the heaviest elements only last minutes in the laboratory and have never been found naturally.<\/p>\n<p>Interested in<a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/tutoring-programs\/science-tutoring\/\"> Science tutoring services<\/a>?
