{"id":6522,"date":"2014-01-31T16:47:33","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T16:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/?p=6522"},"modified":"2014-12-02T08:25:33","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T08:25:33","slug":"math-review-of-polygons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/scholarship\/2014\/01\/31\/math-review-of-polygons\/","title":{"rendered":"Math Review of Polygons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Polygons are geometric figures that are made up of line segments.\u00a0 Many of them, such as triangles, squares, and rectangles, are familiar shapes.\u00a0 Others, such as heptagons (7 sides) and nonagons (9 sides) are not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Are Polygons Constructed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Polygons are constructed from the connection of line segments end to end, but not in a straight line.\u00a0 For example, the triangle \u2206ABC is made up of the line segments AB, BC, and CA.\u00a0 Those three line segments are the sides of the triangle, and the points where they meet are called the vertices.\u00a0 More complex polygons are formed when more line segments are joined together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Are Polygons Named?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Polygons are named for the number of sides they have.\u00a0 While four-sided figures can be called quadrilaterals generally, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms all have special properties.\u00a0 Five-sided figures are pentagons and six-sided figures are hexagons.\u00a0 Polygons have special names for the number of sides up to the 10-sided decagon.\u00a0 After that, they are generally named for the number of sides, such as an 11-gon, a 32-gon, and even an n-gon, that has n sides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Diagonals?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diagonals are line segments that connect vertices of a polygon that are not sides of the polygon.\u00a0 For example, the quadrilateral ABCD has 4 sides consisting of a line segment from A to B, one from B to C, one from C to D, and one from D to A.\u00a0 However, there are also 2 vertices inside the quadrilateral, one from A to C and one from B to D.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Are Convex and Concave Polygons?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In convex polygons, the sides are joined in such a way that no diagonal is outside the boundaries of the polygon.\u00a0 The most common polygons are convex.\u00a0 However, the sides are joined in such a way in concave polygons that at least one diagonal can be drawn that is outside the boundaries of the polygon.\u00a0 One or two sides of the perimeter fall inside the geometric figure.\u00a0 For example, in this figure, the star polygon is concave, so that diagonals could be drawn to join vertices that would be outside the star figure.\u00a0 By contrast, the diagonals of the hexagon, a convex figure would all lie inside the hexagon.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2012\/01\/angles-of-polygons1.png\">https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2012\/01\/angles-of-polygons1.png<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/schooltutoring.com\/math-tutoring\/geometry-tutoring\">geometry tutoring services<\/a>?
